C/O Starwood Vacation Ownership 9002 San Marco Court Building 1000 Orlando, Florida 32819 DATE: November 18, 2010 CONTENTS: Developer Application Form A Artwork Design Description Artist Resume Recommendation By Minute Motion, approve proposed artwork "Willow" by Steven Rieman as the public art component for the Westin Desert Willow Villas located at 75 Willow Ridge, Palm Desert, California. Commission Recommendation At its meeting of October 20, 2010, the Art in Public Places Commission unanimously voted to accept "Willow" as the public art component for the Westin Desert Willow Villas. Discussion The "Willow" concept takes its inspiration from the desert willow tree. It is intended to be a discrete work that is in harmony with both the landscape and architectural elements of the Westin Desert Willow Villa's plaza entry. The tree canopy will be created from bronze with a green patina, the trunk and root structure will be created from stainless steel, and the base of the sculpture will be a large boulder. A weathered steel column 10' tall x 3' wide x 2' deep will be placed behind the tree form to Staff Report Public Art Component for Westin Desert Willow Villas November 18, 2010 Page 2 of 2 provide a structural soundness. The sides of the column will have depictions of birds in flight cut into them. The piece will be located in the center of the porte cochere, which is located at the guest drop off area. The sculpture will be accessible to the public twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Fiscal Analvsis The fee paid into the public art fund by the developer to-date is $101,115 with the cost of the artwork being $64,959.
