Recommendation
By Minute Motion, approve the City of Palm Desert's participation in a Desert
Sun Commemorative insert in the amount of $500. Funds are available in the
Marketing Special Events Account No.110-4416-414-3062.
Background
On September 18, 2010, California State University, San Bernardino's Palm Desert
Campus welcomed their 25th anniversary class. Dr. Fred E. Jandt, the Dean of the Palm
Desert Campus, formally invited the City of Palm Desert to celebrate this occasion as they
reflect on their many years of providing a quality higher education in the Coachella Valley.
Due to the current economic climate, the University will not be hosting any formal dinner or
functions. They are instead planning a series of low-key personal events. One such event
that they are requesting the City of Palm Desert's participate in is a commemorative insert
that will be placed in the Desert Sun in December 2010. The insert will be a 10'x10" eight
page booklet with photos and short stories. It will also include various congratulatory
messages.
The University requests the City's assistance with underwriting the costs of this newspaper
insert by placing a congratulatory message within the insert. The requested donation is
$500 (1/4 page) or $1,000 (half page) as appropriate. Staff is recommending participation
in the insert with a donation of $500. Staff is also looking into the possibility of preparing an
article to be included in a future PD Style issue, which will focus on the educational
contributions of the University within the Coachella Valley over the last 25 years.

Dear John,
In 1986 Ronald Reagan was president and sweeping tax reform legislation was introduced. Also
in 1986, California State University, San Bernardino started offering classes in the Coachella
Valley on the campus of College of the Desert. Catharine Gannon, known then as director, is
said to have registered the first class of students out of the trunk of her car.
On September 18 we will welcome our 25th anniversary class at our permanent site on Cook
Street. The City of Palm Desert has been such an important part of the past 25 years. The city
and its citizenry have been there from the beginning and I am grateful for the ongoing generosity
and support the City has continued to show. From the unbelievable donation of the land for our
permanent site here on Cook, to the City's generous support of the Palm Desert Health Sciences
Building -- and so much in between — we are truly thankful.
We want to invite you to be a part of our year of reflection and acknowledgemeni. hen w .::.:l .
struggling with today's economic uncertainties, it is not a time for blank -tie dinners. Instead r\e:
are planning a series of low-key, more personal events. In the fall, for example, 0.o a
commemorative photograph of our incoming class, a billboard which will circulate throughout
the Valley, a morning reception at COD for those who were there at the beginning, and a tent a.
Indio's Tamale Festival for past students to drop by.
We are also planning a commemorative insert in The Desert Sun. This insert will tel' our stor,
to the community. I need to ask your help to make that newspaper insert happen. The insert wti
be a 10"xl0" 8-page booklet with photos and short stories. It will also have about 8 "paid ad"
or "congratulatory messages." I am asking you to help underwrite the cost of the newspaper
insert by putting your message in one of the "ads." Each "ad" will be 5"1c" ;n sr.e. It c.n:
contain any message of your choice. We'll do the graphics for you if you'll toil u. what y+'
want.
We're only making this appeal to a very short list of people who have had a specia' relationshi:
with the campus. Please let me know if you will participate by returning the enclosed form.
With sincere appreciation for your support,
Fred E. Jandt, Ph.D.
