REQUEST: Approval to Pay City's 2011 Sponsorship of the International Sports
Festival to the Desert Recreation District

Recommendation
By Minute Motion:
Approve payment in the amount of $26,000 to Desert Recreation District for the 2011
International Sports Festival from Account No. 110-4416-414-3062.
Discussion
As part of the FY 2010/11 Budget, City Council approved various sponsorships exceeding $25,000. Staff
must obtain Council approval prior to making payments of sponsorships over this limit. As a result, staff is
requesting Council approval to make payment to Desert Recreation District for the 2011 International
Sports Festival in the amount of $26,000.
The International Sports Festival, formerly known as the Senior Games, was first held in 2000 and has
been cosponsored by the City since inception. The event continues to grow and in 2011 yielded 1,176
total participants (up 23% from 2010). The event drew in 335 local participants and 841 non -local
participants ranging from 35 to 91 years of age. The 841 non -local residents travelled from Arizona,
Wisconsin, Nevada, Texas, Florida, Colorado and Utah. The City's sponsorship dollars help fund media,
advertising, opening ceremonies and dedicated emergency response for the event.
Fiscal Analysis
Funding for this event was included as part of the FY 2010/2011 Budget; therefore, there will be no
additional impact to the General Fund, as funds are available in Account No. 110-4416-414-3062.
