Aryan, Assistant to the City Manager DATE: April 28, 2011 CONTENTS: Training Information Recommendation By Minute Motion, approve the Palm Desert Police Department's request to expend funds, not to exceed $750, for the Palm Desert Police Department K- 9 Team to attend a tracking seminar at Alderhorst International (Riverside, CA). Funds are available under the CalCops program (Account # 229-4210- 422-3914). Commission Recommendation On March 29, 2011, the Palm Desert Public Safety Commission recommended that the City Council approve the Palm Desert Police Department's recommendation for the Palm Desert Police Department K-9 Team to attend a tracking seminar at Alderhorst International (Riverside, CA). Backaround The Palm Desert Police Department's K-9 Team, consisting of Officer Steve Rivera and canine Van Snapp, is regularly called upon to search for both suspects and citizens. The K-9 Team's current abilities involve locating subjects by sight and smell (i.e. wind scent). The Police Department recommends the K-9 Team undergo training to also locate subjects by tracking methods. This method involves a K-9 Team to track/trail the footsteps of a subject by training the police canine to distinguish between crushed vegetation, disturbed surfaces, and undisturbed surfaces. This capability is usually seen in film and television programming when a bloodhound tracks a subject. This training is offered in the form of a forty hour Tracking Training Seminar presented by Alderhorst International Inc. (Riverside, CA) from April 25-29, 2011. INSTRUCTION The instruction will be based on the crushed vegetation concept as well as hard surface and tactical situational tracking. QUALIFICATIONS Adlerhorst has twice placed teams in first place in the prestigious W.P.O.
