Aryan, Assistant to the City Manager DATE: August 25, 2011 CONTENTS: Police Department Request for Training/Conferences Form Recommendation By Minute Motion, approve the Palm Desert Police Department's request to expend CAL Cops funds, not to exceed $1,986.00, for sending two Palm Desert Community Services Officers to a Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design Course (Coronado, CA). Funds are available under the CAL Cops program (Account # 229-4210-422-3914). Commission Recommendation The Public Safety Commission is currently on summer hiatus. This item will not be presented to them at their September meeting because the training course occurs before this next regularly scheduled meeting. Background The Palm Desert Police Department requests authorization to expend CAL Cops funds in the amount of $1,986 to send two Community Services Officers to a twenty-four hour Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) course in Coronado, CA, scheduled for August 29-31, 2011. These two individuals are currently assigned to the Palm Desert Police Department's Crime Prevention Program. The class is designed to train officers on the "target hardening" concepts known as CPTED. The course instructor is the President of the National Institute of Crime Prevention. This conference is considered essential training for the Palm Desert Police Department's Crime Prevention Officers. The training will enhance their ability to conduct CPTED inspections of business, residences, and apartment complexes throughout Palm Desert. The training will also further enhance their ability to develop the Police Department's Crime Prevention Program and related community benefits that the program offers.
