Interviews of selected applicants were scheduled and conducted at City Council Study Sessions held Friday, January 28, and Monday, January 31, 2011. Following the Study Sessions, direction was given to prepare a staff report reflecting the recommended appointments and reappointments as presented here. As an educator for 35 years in CVUSD and DSUSD,1 taught both regular education and Special Education K-12. I retired as a Special Education Program Specialist administrator for Desert Sands Unified in 2001. 1 have had a long time interest in how cities provide for children and families. I was chairman of a parent committee at Washington Elementary School in 1980 that was responsible for developing the first public park/ school play yard. This was a joint project of the City of Palm Desert, parent organizations, and the school district. Due to my involvement in education and the study of children's play, I became interested in children's museums. I became a co-founder with artist/educator Donna Klarin of the Children's Museum of the Desert in Rancho Mirage and served as its' Board President from 1987-1990. Besides working with projects that involve children, I have also been interested in local history. I have been the chairman of the 1909 Schoolhouse at the Coachella Valley History Museum in Indio for nine years. I have enjoyed volunteering as a docent to introduce visitors to life in a turn- of- the century desert schoolhouse. I also keep an active membership in the Palm Desert Historical Society. I have always been interested in visual art. I have been able to indulge this interest by becoming a trained docent for the Palm Springs Art Museum since 2001. I have been employed as the School Liaison for the Museum from 2006-2010. In this position I have worked on creating communication and connections between valley schools and the PSAM. I believe that "public art" is a wonderful, informal way that people can be touched by the powerful nature of art to affect emotions and inspire thoughts. I am so pleased that my hometown has the distinction of being a leader in this area.
