APPROVE THE 2011 PALM DESERT GOLF CART PARADE AND
SPONSORSHIP

By Minute Motion:
1. Approve sponsorship in the amount of $25,000 and in -kind Public Works
services for the Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade;
2. Authorize the expenditure of funds from Account No. 110-4416-414-3062;
3. Permit the sale, possession, and consumption of alcoholic beverages on City
owned property in connection with the event on Sunday, October 23, 2011;
4. Authorize El Paseo road closure for the event; and
5. Waive Section 11.01.140 — Amplified Sound.
Executive Summary:
The Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade began 47 years ago and is the largest parade of its
kind in the world. The event has an estimated attendance of between 10,000 and
20,000 constituents. Palm Desert has been a title sponsor for the parade over the past
seven years. In 2010, the City's contribution for the parade was in the amount of
$25,000, plus in -kind services offered from the Public Works Department to handle
traffic control and road closures for the event. This year the parade is schedule to take
place on Sunday, October 23, 2011. Funds have been set aside for this event in the
FY 2011 /12 budget.
Background:
The City has been a title sponsor of the parade and a strong supporter of this event for
several years through financial contribution, as well as in -kind services provided by City
staff. As a title sponsor, the benefits to the City are:
Media and marketing coverage of the event which in turn promotes the City.
• An expanded senior seating area at the 2011 event.

• An expanded interactive children's area that provides entertainment for young
children before, during, and after the parade ends.
• An expanded food vendor area.
Fiscal Analysis:
Sponsorship in the amount of $25,000 was approved as part of the FY 2011 /12 budget.
