Recommendation
By Minute Motion, authorize the Palm Desert Visitor Center Coordinator to
attend the Las Vegas Souvenir and Resort Gift Show in Las Vegas,
Nevada, from September 12 to September 14, 2012.
Funds are available in General Fund Account No. 110-4419-453.31-20, Visitor Center
Conference/Seminars/Workshops.
Background
In September 2011, City Council approved contracting with Landmark Golf to provide
retail and merchandising consulting services for the Palm Desert Visitor Center. One of
Landmark's recommendations was for Visitor Center representatives to attend the
California Gift Show in Los Angeles as it "provides an opportunity to see new
products... which will assist in the purchase of inventory for the Visitor Center."
Visitor Center Coordinator Barbara Blythe attended the California Gift Show on July 27,
2012. While that show offered good options for apparel, it offered few choices for
souvenirs which can be customized with a Palm Desert logo. The best opportunity for
Ms. Blythe to reach new souvenir vendors is at the Las Vegas Souvenir and Resort Gift
Show, held September 11-14, 2012. With over 1100 exhibitor booths, it is one of the
country's largest wholesale shows to focus exclusively on the resort market.

There is no registration cost for this event. The cost of a hotel for two nights is
approximately $155 including tax, and mileage for driving her personal vehicle to the
show will total approximately $280. Consequently, the cost to the City of Palm Desert
will be no more than $550.
Approval of attendance at this national gift show affords the opportunity for the Visitor
Center Coordinator to efficiently review a variety of potential new merchandise from
multiple new vendors. By doing so she will implement one of the stated objectives of
the retail consultant's report which is proposed to ultimately increase revenue to the
City.
Fiscal Analysis
No additional funding is required to allow the Visitor Center Coordinator to attend the
Las Vegas Souvenir and Resort Show. Funds are available in the approved budget for
the Visitor Center.
