PUBLIC SAFETY COMMISSION MEETING December 14, 2011
Motion by Commissioner Kirkwood to receive and file this report
seconded by Commissioner Luhring, unanimously approved.
B. Update on the City of Palm Desert's Local Hazard Mitigation Plan
Revision.
Stephen Aryan reported that the City of Palm Desert is in the process
of updating its current Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP). The
Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 (DMA), commonly known as the 2000
Stafford Act amendments, was approved by Congress on October 10,
2000. The DMA 2000 emphasizes greater interaction between State
and local hazard identification, mitigation planning, and other mitigation
activities.
The City of Palm Desert's LHMP provides a list of mitigation activities
that may assist the City in reducing risk and preventing loss from future
hazard events. It has been demonstrated that hazard mitigation is
most effective when based on an inclusive comprehensive, long-term
plan that is developed before a disaster actually occurs.
City of Palm Desert staff anticipates completing this update in
December/January and will forward it to the Riverside County Office of
Emergency Services, to be included as part of a multi -jurisdictional
LHMP submitted to the California Emergency Management Agency.
Motion by Commissioner Luhring to Receive and File the report,
seconded by Commissioner Nethery, unanimously approved.
