the California Desert Protection Act of 2011 (S. 138)
Committee Recommendation
On January 31, 2012, the Palm Desert Legislative Review Committee recommended
that the City Council approve a letter reaffirming the City's support for the California
Desert Protection Act of 2011 (S. 138).
Backaround
The California Desert Protection Act of 2011 (S. 138) is a bill to provide for
conservation, enhanced recreation opportunities, and development of renewable energy
in the California Desert Conservation Area, and for other purposes. The City provided
its support of this bill in 2010. At the request of the California Wilderness Coalition,
another letter from the City is requested to reaffirm its support of this Act.
The proposed Sand to Snow National Monument would provide for protection and
cohesive management of the dramatic landscapes that form the scenic backdrop to our
desert communities. Some of the lands within the proposed National Monument are
also within the Reserve System for the Coachella Valley Multiple Species Habitat
Conservation Plan (CVMSHCP). The lands that area a part of the proposed Sand to
Snow National Monument and the CVMSHCP are spectacular outdoor recreation areas.
Therefore, staff recommends supporting this California Desert Protection Act of 2011.
