Johnson Memorial GardensCITY OF PALM DESERT ART IN PUBLIC PLACES COMMISSION STAFF REPORT REQUEST: RECEIVE AND FILE INFORMATIONAL REPORT OF PROPOSED SCULPTURES FOR THE ERIC JOHNSON MEMORIAL GARDENS AT THE PALM SPRINGS ART MUSEUM IN PALM DESERT LOCATED AT 72-567 HIGHWAY 111 SUBMITTED BY: Deborah Schwartz, Public Art Coordinator DATE: January 12, 2012 CONTENTS: Sculpture Garden Site Plan Artwork Images and Descriptions Recommendation That the City Council receive and file this informational report. No further action is required at this time. Discussion As part of the lease agreement between the City of Palm Desert and the Palm Springs Art Museum, the Museum will create a sculpture garden in the Eric Johnson Memorial Gardens, which are adjacent to the new Palm Springs Art Museum located in the old Palm Desert Visitor Center building. The Museum proposes to site nine sculptures (see attached site map, artwork images, and descriptions for details) in the Gardens, and will work with City staff to ensure that the sculptures do not inappropriately impede on the existing landscape. The Museum would like to site a tenth sculpture on a pad adjacent to the Henderson Community Building. That piece, which is entitled "OI' One Tooth" by Mark Di Suvero, would come under a secondary lease agreement. The Museum's philosophy behind the selection of sculptures is to create a sculpture garden filled with high quality artwork that is a survey of Post -War sculpture as well as reflective of the citizenry of the Coachella Valley. There is work from Latino, Southern California, and Israeli artists, among others. The sculptures range from figurative to abstract with representation from early career to very important, well known including renowned Minimalist Donald Judd. At its December 21, 2011 meeting, the Art in Public Places Commission received a presentation on the sculptures from Museum staff. Because these sculptures are not a part of Staff Report Informational Staff Repot - PSAM in Palm Desert Sculptures January 21, 2012 Page 2 of 2 the City's public art program, the Commission took no action on the item, but was very supportive of the selected sculptures. Fiscal Analysis As per the lease agreement, the City is responsible for costs associated with the transportation, installation and removal of the sculptures at a cost of up to $10,000 per sculpture, as well as the installation of bases and/or foundations, lighting, cleaning and ongoing maintenance, and insurance on the sculptures. The City is also required to pay the Museum a onetime honorarium of $2,625 per sculpture. Appropriation of the funds needed to install and maintain these sculptures will be the subject of a future report and request for Council action. Submitted by: Deborah L.
