CONSENT CALENDAR O>� Z cE. zc: +Jax �azaa>o Minutes of the regular meeting held on January 18, 2012. Commissioner Hough noted that she would like to add "Backyard Oasis" to the January 18, 2012 minutes on Page 5, under XI. Reports and Remarks, Item B. Commission Members. The report by Commissioner Hough will now read, "Commissioner Hough Art in Public Places Minutes March 21 2012 reported that there is an opening at the Museum of a photography exhibition called Backyard Oasis on Friday, January 20." Upon Motion by Commissioner Hough and second by Commissioner Bussing, the Minutes of January 18, 2012 were approved unanimously as corrected with Commissioners Snyder and Thompson absent V. DISCUSSION ITEMS t A. ORAL REVIEW OF CITY COUNCIL ACTION — Mayor Pro Tem Bill Kroonen Mayor Pro Tern Kroonen reported that he attended the ribbon cutting at the Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Desert location and presented a proclamation to Harold and Dorothy Meyerman in recognition of their name placement on the Walk of the Stars. Ms. Schwartz reported that at its meeting of March 8, 2012, City Council approved the annual contract for Same Day Express who maintains the City's public art collection and the El Paseo Invitational Exhibition. Upon question by Commissioner Darby, Ms. Schwartz explained that the City owns the old Visitor Center property and the Eric Johnson Memorial Gardens. Because the Museum had naming rights of the location where the outdoor sculptures will be placed, it has been named the Faye Sarkowsky Sculpture Garden at the Eric Johnson Memorial Gardens. Ms. Schwartz encouraged the Commission Members to tour the new Palm Springs Art Museum location in Palm Desert. B. PLANNING COMMISSION REPORT — Sonia Campbell Ms. Campbell reported that at its meeting of March 20, 2012, the Planning Commission revoked an amendment to Napa's Tapas Conditional Use Permit which means that it must return to its original use which was as a wine bar. C. ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMISSION REPORT — John Vuksic 4 Art in Public Places Minutes March 21 2012 Mr. Vuksic reported that the Architectural Review Commission approved the additional patio seating at Starbucks on El Paseo and San Pablo. Best Buy is moving to Desert Crossing and will be changing the existing fagade. VI. CONSENT ITEMS HELD OVER None VII. NEW BUSINESS A. CONSIDERATION OF PROPOSALS FOR EXHIBITION IN THE PALM DESERT COMMUNITY GALLERY FOR THE 2012/2013 SEASON Ms. Schwartz stated that the gallery season is from July to June and includes five exhibitions; one being the Annual Student Art and Essay Contest. Staff received more than thirty proposals from artists who applied to exhibit in the Palm Desert Community Gallery. The following artists sent in proposals. Abby Cameron, Bijan Masoumpanah, Chris Marlow, Christina Lange, Christine Hall, Colleen Simmons, Dennis Johnson, Ed Seeberger, Gary Rosenblum, George Kenton, Janelle Leslie, Judy L. LeSueur-Maranville, Kathy Dunham, Kory Taylor, Kristen Winters, Laureen Little, Lorraine Klotz, Mario Pikus, Martha Valentin, Richard Lon Rowland, Ronald Backer, Ryan Campbell, Stacy Wood, William Bloomhuff, Clifford Wilson, Doris Mechanick, Enieda Reboucas, Josie Urrea, Mario Cespedes, and Peggy Ann Stevens. It was moved by Commissioner Bussing and seconded by Commissioner Miller to accept artists Christina Lange, Dennis Johnson, and George Kenton as one show; Ed Seeberger and Lorraine Klotz as one show; Mario Pikus, Richard Lon Rowland, and Ryan Campbell as one show, and Ronald Backer as a solo show to exhibit in the Palm Desert Community Gallery for the 201212013 season. Motion carried with Commissioners Snyder and Thompson absent. B. APPROVAL OF EIGHTEEN ALTERNATES FOR THE INVITATIONAL EXHIBITION SELECTIONS AND THREE 2013/2014 EL PASEO 3 Art in Public Places Minutes March 21 2012 Vice Chairperson Darby reported that the subcommittee met to review the proposals for the 2013/2014 El Paseo Invitational Exhibition and selected eighteen artists and two alternates. The following artists' proposals were accepted for the 2013/2014 El Paseo Invitational Exhibition. Alisa Looney, Tony and Karen Barone, Carlos Basanta, C.J. Rench, Daniel Meyer (A Gallery), Daniel Stern, DeeAnne Wagner, DeeDee Morrison, Delos Van Earl, Dore Capitani, Heath Satow, Michael Anderson, Lina and Gus Ocamposilva, Patricia Vader, Patrick Blythe, Ron Simmer, Stephen Fairfield, and Ana Lazovsky with Steve Jensen and DeeAnne Wagner as the two alternates. It was moved by Commissioner Bussing and seconded by Commissioner Miller to accept the eighteen artists and two alternates selected by the subcommittee for the 201312014 El Paseo Invitational Exhibition. Motion carried with Commissioners Snyder and Thompson absent. C. CONSIDERATION OF ARTISTS TO BE INCLUDED IN CITY OF PALM DESERT'S ARTIST REGISTRY The following artists applied to be included in the City of Palm Desert's Artist Registry. BJ Krivanek, Eric Tillinghast, Patrick Marold, and Sophie Kahn. It was moved by Commissioner Hough and seconded by Commissioner Miller to include artists BJ Krivanek and Patrick Marold into the City of Palm Desert's Artist Registry. Motion carried unanimously with Commissioners Snyder and Thompson absent. VIII. CONTINUED BUSINESS NONE IX. OLD BUSINESS NONE X. PROJECT STATUS REPORTS A. Palm Desert Community Gallery Ms. Schwartz reported that the current exhibition is the Student Art and Essay Contest. Maria Hunt's show, Farming 4 Art in Public Places Minutes March 21 2012 in the Desert — Up Close & Personal which is part of Desertscapes, will follow the Student Art and Essay Contest. The opening reception for Maria Hunt's show is Monday, April 30 at 5:30 p.m. B. Docent Program Ms. Schwartz reported that the docents have been busy giving tours. Three art classes from COD will tour the Civic Center Park for a total of approximately 180 students. Ms. Schwartz is giving a presentation to a group at Desert Willow who will then be given a tour at the Civic Center Park. C. Public Art Film Series Ms. Schwartz reported that the March 15, film Rape of Europa, was sold out. April 19 is the last night of the Film Series and will include short films of Jim Dine, Cappy Thompson, and Donald Judd. Dr. Steven Nash will speak after the films. D. Student Art and Essay Contest Ms. Thompson announced that the Award Ceremony for the Student Art and Essay Contest is Thursday, March 29, at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chamber. She thanked the Commissioners for their help in judging the contest. Commissioner Thompson will announce the winners at the Award Ceremony. E. Library Ms. Schwartz reported that the renovation at the Library will begin in April. The wall behind the Circulation Desk will be removed which includes artwork by artist Barbara Fields who is aware of the changes. The artwork will be moved to the outside of the building and Ms. Schwartz is working with the architect regarding placement. F. Desertscapes Ms. Schwartz reported that Desertscapes is celebrating its third season with a great line up of events. She circulated the Desertscapes rack card to the Commission Members. Maria Hunt's gallery exhibition, Farming in the Desert — Up 5 Art in Public Places Minutes March 21, 2012 Close & Personal will be the closing event for Desertscapes. Commissioner Darby is working on a fund raiser at the McCallum Theatre that is also part of Desertscapes. XI. REPORTS AND REMARKS A. STAFF Ms. Schwartz reported that approximately eight of Betty Gold's sculptures have been installed at Cal State San Bernardino Palm Desert campus. B. COMMISSION MEMBERS Commissioner Hough reported that Michael Petry will have three exhibitions at the Palm Springs Art Museum through July. Michael Petry is a conceptual artist whose installations are site specific. He does not do the artwork himself but collaborates with other artists. The three installations are Golden Rain, Joshua D's Wall, and The Dilemma. All three exhibitions are site specific to the environment of the Museum. XI.
