The staff at Washington Charter School is dedicated and goes the extra mile on a daily
basis. As a public charter we have used the flexibility granted to us by the State Board of
Education to improve student achievement and to provide our students a well-rounded
educational program. We passionately believe that parents should have a choice regarding
the school their child attends. As a charter school all of our families are here by choice.
Parent involvement and support is a key to our school's success. For the past ten years our
parents and community members have volunteered more than 20,000 hours annually. The
effectiveness of our classroom program is enhanced because of the commitment our parents
make to the school. There are a number of opportunities for parents to become involved in
the school. If you desire to volunteer, please talk with your child's teacher or give me a call.
I have had the honor of being the Principal at Washington for the past thirteen years. Each
year brings new excitement. Offering our students a balanced educational program is a
priority. Our specialty programs complement our magnificent classroom teachers and
exceptional support staff.

George Washington Elementary - Principal's Message Page 2 of 2
Sincerely,
Allan Lehmann
Principal
Thank you for you interest in Washington Charter School. I would like to take a moment to
introduce myself.
I was born and raised in Okemos, Michigan. My dad has taught at Michigan State University
since 1957. Even though he officially retired a few years ago he still goes into his office
each day. I feel I was born with a predisposition to teaching. I graduated in 1985 from
Michigan State University and left the snow and cold of Michigan to come to California. I
was recruited to teach 5th grade in Yucca Valley, California. For five years I taught 5th
grade and for the next three I was a third -grade teacher. I loved every moment in the
classroom. During my years in Yucca Valley I returned to college and obtained a Master's
Degree in Educational Administration. After eight years in the classroom I became the
Assistant Principal at Yucca Mesa Charter School. I was fortunate to have the opportunity
of assisting in the writing of the initial charter petition for Yucca Mesa. After being
Assistant Principal for one year I was asked to become the Principal. I served as the
Principal of Yucca Mesa for the next three years.
In the spring of 1998 I was .privileged to be selected as the Principal of Washington Charter
School. I have had the honor and pleasure of being at Washington Charter School for the
past 11 years. It seemed like only yesterday that I became a member of this fabulous team.
The school has gone through three successful charter renewals the most recent one coming
in June 2006.
I have a wonderful family. My wife Sheryl teaches 3"d grade at Sunny Sands Elementary
School in Cathedral City. We have two amazing sons. Our eldest is a sophomore at college
and our "baby" is in 11th grade at Palm Desert High School.
When visiting the campus you will find that I have an open door policy and am very
approachable. Washington Charter School is a special place because of the efforts of the
WC5 family (parents, staff, students and community). We are passionate about providing
each of our students a balanced educational program within a nurturing school environment.
Please feel free to e-mail any questions that you may have about the school and or our
educational programs. If we have not already met I look forward to meeting you.
