Stephen Y. Aryan, Risk Manager September 13, 2012 Palm Springs Modernism Week Sponsorship Information By Minute Motion, approve sponsorship of Palm Springs Modernism Week 2013 in the amount of $5,000 and appropriate $2,500 from the Unobligated General Fund. Committee Recommendation The City of Palm Desert Marketing Committee voted unanimously to recommend that the City Council sponsor Palm Springs Modernism Week 2013 at the $5,000 gold level. There were two conditions that the Marketing Committee recommended and the motion included the following items: 1. Encourage Modernism Week organizers to utilize the City's sponsorship funds to support participating Palm Desert entity activities. 2. Request that event collateral/promotional materials incorporate language that recognizes other participating communities (e.g. reference Coachella Valley, Greater Palm Springs area, etc.) Background Now in its eighth year, Palm Springs Modernism Week is a well -established event that has successfully recruited sponsors and continues to grow. It is an eleven day celebration of mid-century modern design, architecture and culture within Palm Springs and surrounding communities. Modernism Week is filled with a variety of events including architectural tours, films, lectures, an architectural symposium, and educational events. Staff Report: Palm Springs Modernism Week 2013 September 13, 2012 Page 2 of 3 In October 2011, the City Council approved $2,500 towards supporting Palm Springs Modernism Week. Event organizers hoped to have some events at the Palm Springs Art Museum -Palm Desert (The Galen) should it be open by February 2012. As The Galen was not opened during Modernism Week 2012, event organizers indicated that they would consider hosting local events for the 2013 event. The original $2,500 in funding was carried over for such consideration. The City has now been approached by Modernism Week, Sandpiper and Marrakesh Country Club representatives requesting sponsorship. Marrakesh Country Club (Club) is organizing its inaugural Designer Showcase in partnership with Modernism Week. Organizers intend to spotlight the Club and the community of Palm Desert with daily events including an opening night party, tours, and luncheons. The Club is a Diamond Sponsor ($10,000 sponsorship) of Modernism Week. Nickie McLaughlin, Executive Director of Palm Springs Modernism Week, confirmed several details related to the role Palm Desert will play in the 2013 event: 1. Modernism Week partnered with Marrakesh and fully supports that program 2. Working with Sandpiper to host home tours and a reception 3. They hope to work with College of the Desert faculty and students to design and display work at The Galen 4. Considering various additional activities involving The Galen 5. Considering an event on El Paseo that would involve local art galleries She further indicated that as a gold sponsor the City of Palm Desert will receive plenty of publicity along with promotion of events that are happening in Palm Desert. As for participating communities, she indicates they use the Coachella Valley in their media releases and describe their event as "architecture and culture that encompasses Palm Springs and the neighboring communities of the Coachella Valley". The City's Marketing Manager, Donna Gomez, indicates that it appears all of these activities have merit and will assist in bringing people and visibility to Palm Desert during what has been a Palm Springs focused event. Based on the number of potential Palm Desert partners participating in Modernism Week, staff recommends that sponsorship consideration be given to the event organizers directly, as opposed to considering requests that could potentially come from a variety of Palm Desert entities. As a Modernism Week sponsor, the City would receive several promotional benefits as outlined in the attached sponsorship packet. These benefits would not be available through funding of individual entities. Staff Report: Palm Springs Modernism Week 2013 September 13, 2012 Page 3 of 3 Fiscal Analysis The City Council previously appropriated $2,500 for funding of Palm Springs Modernism Week 2012. These funds were not utilized and subsequently carried over to FY 2012/2013. If the City Council approves the $5,000 sponsorship request, an additional $2,500 would have to be appropriated from the Unobligated General Fund. Submitted By: Stephen Y.
