V. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE
DECEMBER 3, 2012 -MINUTES
A. APPROVAL OF THE NOVEMBER 5, 2012, MEETING MINUTES
Member Andrew Mehta moved, by Minute Motion, to approve the minutes of
the November 5, 2012, meeting. Motion was seconded by Member Daniel Sanford
and carried by unanimous vote.

VIII. CONTtNUED BUSINESS
A. Selection of Non-Profit Organization to Benefit from Car Wash Fundraiser
Upon review of the five non-profit organizations submitted by Youth
Committee members for consideration as the beneficiary of the Committee's
Car Wash Fundraiser to be held in the spring (i.e. Christopher's Clubhouse,
Pegasus Riding Academy, Shelter From the Storm, Martha's Village and
Kitchen, and Desert Arc), Shelter from the Storm was selected by majority
vote. Members Yung Kim and Don Sandoval volunteered to chair this event
and Ms. Lawrence suggested that they begin working on promotion and
coordination in February.
B. DISCUSSION of Proposed Activities/Subcommittees for 2012/13
Ms. �awrence reported that she and Member Mehta would be meeting with
two City staff members to discuss the possibility of creating an official Palm
Desert Youth Committee website.
Ms. Lawrence noted that she would soon be contacting the City's contact at
"Blood Services of the Desert" to discuss the Youth Committee's possible
collaboration on a blood drive.
Upon Ms. Lawrence's question as to if the Committee would be interested in
hosting an event to assist seniors with their electronic equipment, it was
mentioned that it may be best held at an assisted living center versus the
senior center.
Ms. Lawrence relayed that Palm Desert Charter Middle School would be
holding a 5K run to raise funds for technology equipment on Saturday.
January 26; 2013. Upon question as to if the Committee would like to assist,
she agreed to get more information for further discussion at the January
meeting.

With regard to the Committee's interest in emergency and disaster
preparedness, Ms. Lawrence indicated that the Fire Department will be
providing a presentation on this subject at the January meeting.
Upon discussion regarding Riverside County's "Youth in Government Day"
where students can job shadow workers in various County departments, Ms.
Lawrence agreed to get more information on this for Committee members.
Member pon Sandoval reported that he is considering contacting Beach
House Frozen Yogurt to see if they would be willing to host a fundraiser to
benefit Animal Samaritans. Ms. Lawrence explained that if this event did
occur, Committee members would have to provide promotion and distribute
flyers in order for the fundraiser to be a success. It was also noted that there
was a "Beach House Yogurt Club" at Palm Desert High School and Member
Sandoval and Chair Bloch agreed to speak with them as well. Ms. Lawrence
asked for a follow up report on this at the next meeting.
C. REPORT of Subcommittee Assignments
1. Lincoln Elementary School Holiday Party
Member Wes Wohlmuth noted that this event is scheduled for Thursday,
December 20, at 3:00 p.m. He passed around a signup sheet and
explained that at least ten members are needed to help kids with crafts
and games. Member Wohlmuth also confirmed that he secured Santa
Claus for the day of the event.
2. Palm Desert Charter Middle School Afterschool Program Presentation
Ms. Lawrence relayed Mrs. Beardsley's contact information to Chair
Bloch so that he could finalize plans for the presentation scheduled for
Thursday, December 20.
3. Anti-Bullying Campaign/Assemblies
Ms. Lawrence reminded members of the play that Councilmember Jan
Harnik recommended entitled "Thank You for Flushing My Head Down
the ToileY' which is put on by the Coachella Valley Repertory. She
noted that specific dates and times would be posted on the Youth
Committee's Facebook page in case anyone is interested in attending.
Ms. Lawrence suggested that the Anti-Bullying Subcommittee plan to
meet sometime in January 2013.
4. Legislative Subcommittee
Vice Chair Jason Rosenblum relayed that he will be attending the City's
next Legislative Committee meeting on Friday, January 25, at 9:00 a.m.,
in the City Manager's office. He indicated that after he attends this
meeting he will be able to relay what was discussed to the members of

the Youth Committee's Legislative Subcommittee so that they can
establish their mission and guidelines.
IX. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS
A. CITY COUNCIL ISSUES
Ms. Frankie Riddle reported that Mayor Pro Tem Bill Kroonen was not
reelected to serve on the Palm Desert City Council. Ms. Lawrence indicated
that Mr. Kroonen has been one of the Youth Committee's biggest supporters
and noted that even if he no longer attends meetings and supports the
Committee as a member of City Council, he still has the option to do so as a
community member. She also reminded members that Mr. Kroonen was the
one that selected the Palm Desert Youth Committee for the theme of the
City's 2013 calendar. Ms. Lawrence distributed copies of the calendar and
noted that Mr. David Hermann asked her to express his appreciation to the
Youth Committee members for their assistance with this project.
X. REPORTS AND REMARKS
A. COMMITTEE MEMBERS
1. Sister Cities Update
None
B. STAFF
Ms. Lawrence requested and was provided an update from those members
that agreed to assist the City's Public Art Technician with contacting the Art
and English teachers at Palm Desert High School regacding the Student Art
and Essay Contest.
Ms. Lawrence reported that the Economic Development Focus Group held
recently went very well. She noted that the City's Economic Development
Manager Ruth Ann Moore asked her to express her appreciation to the
members that participated and let them know how hefpful their input will be.
XI. ADJOURNMENT
Upon motion by Member, Mehta, and second by, Member Roman Bloch, the
meeting was adjourned at 6:24 p.m. Motion carried by unanimous vote.
