Approve Sunday, March 31, 2013, date for the Family Services of the Desert 5K Bunny Hop Race; and 2. Approve El Paseo Road Closure between Ocotillo and Lantana. Discussion Race Producer Vic Gainer (Race Producer for the First Annual 2012 Martha's Village and Kitchen Thanksgiving 5K Race) approached City staff to discuss the proposed Family Services of the Desert 5K Bunny Hop Race scheduled for Sunday, March 31, 2013, (Easter weekend) from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., with a 7:30 a.m. race start. Since the majority of stores on El Paseo, do not open until 11:00 a.m. or later, there should be no significant impact to the businesses. This race is proposed to have approximately 2,500 participants with proceeds benefitting Family Services of the Desert's senior programs. The race will utilize the same course and operate similar to the Martha's Village and Kitchen Thanksgiving Race with some modifications based on changes that were required after observance and experience with the last race (i.e., vendors and registration will be located on Larkspur north of El Paseo [between El Paseo and Hwy 111], announcer's tent area will be fenced off to discourage people from congregating in this area, a lead electric vehicle or motorcycle will maintain course integrity and clear unauthorized individuals from the course, and runner pace corrals will be setup to allow staged starts with faster runners in front, etc.). The course will start and finish on the westbound lanes of El Paseo at Larkspur (in front of the Gardens). The race will start 30 minutes earlier than the Martha's Village and Kitchen Thanksgiving Race with a start time of 7:30 a.m., with complete road reopening by 10:00 a.m. STAFF REPORT APPROVAL OF 2013 FAMILY SERVICES OF THE DESERT 5K RACE JANUARY 24, 2013 PAGE 2 Fiscal Analysis There is no fiscal impact to the City associated with this request.
