A. DISCUSSION OF PROPOSED ACTIVITIES/SUBCOMMITTEES FOR
2012/13
Ms. Lawrence relayed that she had spoken with Mr. Arredondo with
Desert Blood Services about the Youth Committee hosting a four hour
blood drive on a Saturday at City Hall. She conveyed that Mr. Arredondo
was very receptive to the idea; however, in order to schedule the blood
drive, there would need to be at least 25 people (no more than 32)
committed to donate blood during the four hour period. Upon further
discussion, the Committee was positive that they could meet the 25 donor
commitment and agreed to hold the event on Saturday, March 16. Ms.
Lawrence indicated that she would run this date by Mr. Arredondo and
provide an update at the March meeting.
With regard to Teen CERT Training, Ms. Lawrence reported that City staff
is working with the Fire Department to budget this course for next fiscal
year. She stated that if approved, the course may be held in the fall of
2013 or spring of 2014 and that the Youth Committee may have first right
to sign up.
Ms. Lawrence mentioned that she is waiting for a call back from
Supervisor Benoit's office regarding "Youth in Government Day", and also
from the Palm Desert Library regarding possible collaboration on a youth
program. In response to her notation that Ms. Frankie Riddle suggested
collaboration with the McCallum Theater, Chair Bloch mentioned the
McCallum's "Open Call" as an option.

B. REPORT OF SUBCOMMITTEE ASSIGNMNTS
1. PDCMS Afterschool Program Presentation — FOLLOW UP
Chair Bloch relayed that he and Vice Chair Jason Rosenblum
provided a presentation on the Palm Desert Youth Committee to
PDCMS' Afterschool Program on Thursday, January 10, 2013. He
indicated as a follow up for next year, that we consider the fact that
the students in the program are mostly 6th and 7th graders who are
not eligible to serve on the Committee. Chair Bloch suggested
finding a way to present to only 8th graders so that the presentation
serves its purpose which is to recruit members.
2. Youth and Senior Technology Training at the Fountains at the
Carlotta
Ms. Lawrence reported that she had spoken with the events
coordinator at The Fountains at the Carlotta regarding a youth/senior
technology event and that they were very receptive to the idea. She
indicated that eight to ten members would be needed to assist
seniors with their smart phones, tablets, and other electronic
gadgets. Due to limited dates in March and April, Ms. Lawrence
suggested that the event be held on Saturday, April 27. She noted
that an update on this event would be made at the March meeting.
3. Car Wash Fundraiser for Shelter From the Storm
Ms. Lawrence conveyed that she obtained approval from the new
owner of the Palm Desert Self Serve Car Wash to use the facility for
this event in May. She also noted that she had mentioned this event
to Shelter from the Storm and they are very appreciative of the
gesture. Regarding promotion on their end, they plan to announce
the event at their annual gala, on their website and Facebook page,
and also through email blasts. Ms. Lawrence indicated that an article
will be pfaced in the City's BrightSide Newsletter which is sent to all
Palm Desert residents and businesses and that the Committee can
work with Ms. Sherry Barkas from The Desert Sun to promote the
event as well. Ms. Lawrence stated that with all of the promotional
opportunities for this fundraiser, it looks like it will be far more
successful than last year's event. She mentioned that Committee
members Yung Kim and Donovan Sandoval had volunteered to
coordinate this event and that it would be discussed further at the
March meeting.
