PRESENTATIONS Original on File with City Cler s Of'tice None PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE FEBRUARY 4, 2013-MINUTES V. APPROVAL OF MINUTES A. APPROVAL OF THE JANUARY 7, 2013, MEETING MINUTES Upon Motion by Member Daniel Sanford and second by Member Andrew Mehta, the Minutes of January 7, 2013, were approved as presented. Motion carried by unanimous vote. VI. NEW BUSINESS None VII. OLD BUSINESS None VIII. CONTINUED BUSINESS A. DISCUSSION OF PROPOSED ACTIVITIES/SUBCOMMITTEES FOR 2012/13 Ms. Lawrence relayed that she had spoken with Mr. Arredondo with Desert Blood Services about the Youth Committee hosting a four hour blood drive on a Saturday at City Hall. She conveyed that Mr. Arredondo was very receptive to the idea; however, in order to schedule the blood drive, there would need to be at least 25 people (no more than 32) committed to donate blood during the four hour period. Upon further discussion, the Committee was positive that they could meet the 25 donor commitment and agreed to hold the event on Saturday, March 16. Ms. Lawrence indicated that she would run this date by Mr. Arredondo and provide an update at the March meeting. With regard to Teen CERT Training, Ms. Lawrence reported that City staff is working with the Fire Department to budget this course for next fiscal year. She stated that if approved, the course may be held in the fall of 2013 or spring of 2014 and that the Youth Committee may have first right to sign up. Ms. Lawrence mentioned that she is waiting for a call back from Supervisor Benoit's office regarding "Youth in Government Day", and also from the Palm Desert Library regarding possible collaboration on a youth program. In response to her notation that Ms. Frankie Riddle suggested collaboration with the McCallum Theater, Chair Bloch mentioned the McCallum's "Open Call" as an option. 2 PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE FEBRUARY 4, 2013-MINUTES Member ponovan Sandoval stated that he is stiil working on a possible fundraiser at the Beach House Yogurt Shop. B. REPORT OF SUBCOMMITTEE ASSIGNM�NTS 1. PDCMS Afterschool Program Presentation — FOLLOW UP Chair Bloch relayed that he and Vice Chair Jason Rosenblum provided a presentation on the Palm Desert Youth Committee to PDCMS' Afterschool Program on Thursday, January 10, 2013. He indicated as a follow up for next year, that we consider the fact that the students in the program are mostly 6th and 7th graders who are not eligible to serve on the Committee. Chair Bloch suggested finding a way to present to only 8th graders so that the presentation serves its purpose which is to recruit members. 2. Youth and Senior Technology Training at the Fountains at the Carlotta Ms. Lawrence reported that she had spoken with the events coordinator at The Fountains at the Carlotta regarding a youth/senior technology event and that they were very receptive to the idea. She indicated that eight to ten members would be needed to assist seniors with their smart phones, tablets, and other electronic gadgets. Due to limited dates in March and April, Ms. Lawrence suggested that the event be held on Saturday, April 27. She noted that an update on this event would be made at the March meeting. 3. Car Wash Fundraiser for Shelter From the Storm Ms. Lawrence conveyed that she obtained approval from the new owner of the Palm Desert Self Serve Car Wash to use the facility for this event in May. She also noted that she had mentioned this event to Shelter from the Storm and they are very appreciative of the gesture. Regarding promotion on their end, they plan to announce the event at their annual gala, on their website and Facebook page, and also through email blasts. Ms. Lawrence indicated that an article will be pfaced in the City's BrightSide Newsletter which is sent to all Palm Desert residents and businesses and that the Committee can work with Ms. Sherry Barkas from The Desert Sun to promote the event as well. Ms. Lawrence stated that with all of the promotional opportunities for this fundraiser, it looks like it will be far more successful than last year's event. She mentioned that Committee members Yung Kim and Donovan Sandoval had volunteered to coordinate this event and that it would be discussed further at the March meeting. 3 PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE FEBRUARY 4, 2013-MINUTES 4. Anti-Bullying Campaign/Assemblies Member Zannie Murphy and Ms. Lawrence agreed to set up a meeting soon to discuss the direction of this project. Ms. Lawrence suggested working with the elementary school afterschool programs on this topic. 5. Legislative Subcommittee Ms. Lawrence noted that Vice Chair Jason Rosenblum said he would attend the City's next Legislative Committee meeting in February and report back to the Legislative Subcommittee on what was discussed.
