Ryan Stendell, Senior Management Analyst March 14, 2013 Site Map Photos of Damaged Equipment By Minute Motion, approve the removal of sports lighting at the Oleson Baseball Field in an amount not to exceed $16,000.00. Funds are available in Park Fund Account No. 430-4618-454-4001 Background City staff recently was made aware of a significant safety hazard related to the electrical system powering the sports lighting at the Oleson Baseball Field. To repair the existing system would require a large investment (likely over $20,000.00). Considering the condition of the system and property constraints, staff believes the repairs do not make financial sense. The City has seven total fields with sports lighting (four Civic Center, three Freedom Park). Staff has discussed this with the Desert Recreation District (DRD) and the Youth Baseball/Softball Leagues, and all are in agreement that they can function with seven lighted fields in the evening hours. Oleson would still be utilized during weekend days and evenings as daylight hours progressively get longer. Staff contacted a local electrician from the City's preferred vendor listing and has confirmed that the total cost to remove the lights and poles would not exceed $16,000.00. If approved by the Council, staff would follow the City's purchasing policies to award the project. Fiscal Analysis Staff is proposing to utilize funding from the Park Fund, which was set aside to assist in the replacement of this sports lighting in the future. Staff is comfortable that the remaining funds would be adequate for a future lighting system if approved by the Council at a later date. Because this property is owned by the Desert Sands Unified Staff Report Oleson Field Sports Lighting March 14, 2013 Page 2 of 2 School District (DSUSD), staff is proposing a "wait and see" approach, with any future replacement of lighting dependent on need.
