achievement in Girl Scouting. On April 19, 2013, she was presented
the Girl Scout Gold Award and was named the Girl Scout of the Year
for the San Gorgonio Council. She was chosen from among almost
10,000 girls in Riverside and San Bernardino counties; and
Whereas, as the final portion for earning the Gold Award, in
partnership with Companions Visitation Ministry from Sacred Heart
Church, she created a residential visitation program for the elderly,
"A Rose for Mary," and has done what is needed to ensure "A Rose
for Mary" continues; and
Whereas, since the age of five Aspen has been dedicated to
the Girl Scout movement. Because of her dedication to Scouting,
she has developed values to guide her actions and provide a
foundation for sound decision -making and has contributed to the
improvement of society through her abilities, leadership skills, and
cooperation with others; and
Whereas, now 18 years old and a senior at Palm Desert High
School, she has successfully prepared herself for a future in forensic
psychology. Aspen has been accepted and granted a scholarship at
Thomas College in Waterville, Maine.
Now, Therefore, I, Jan C. Harnik, Mayor of the City of
Palm Desert, California, Do Hereby Proclaim Thursday, May 23,
2013, as
Aspen Koestler Day
in the City of Palm Desert and urge all residents to join me in
expressing our appreciation for her special commitment and service
to our community, with our best wishes for many years of continued
