PRESENTATION by Palm Desert City Manager John Wohlmuth on the City's Strategic Plan ' Palm Desert City Manager John Wohlmuth provided information on the City's Strategic Plan which is a long range plan that identifies goals and challenges for the next 20 years. He indicated that goals from past strategic plans included the Hovely Soccer Park, Desert Willow Golf Resort, and the Aquatic Center. Mr. Wohlmuth relayed that it would be beneficial for one or two Palm Desert Youth Committee members to participate in the process of developing the Plan in effort to provide a youth perspective for consideration. He explained that there are two aspects to the Strategic Plan; one being the general Steering Committee and the other being various subcommittees to research specific topics such as arts and culture, transportation, energy and sustainability, public safety, etc. Ms. Amy Lawrence conveyed that whoever is appointed to serve as youth representation on the City's Strategic Plan Steering Committee must be able to attend a majority of the meetings which are held sporadically in May, June, and September through December and take place from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Upon request for volunteers, Member Andrew Mehta moved to appoint Alternate Member Cory Hutchinson fo serve as youth representation on the City's Strategic Plan Steering Committee. The motion was seconded by Member Roman B/och, and carried by unanimous vote. Upon request for an additional vo/unteer, Member Daniel Sanford moved to appoint Alternate Member Josie Ygnatowiz to serve as youth representation on the City's Strategic Plan Steering Committee. The motion was seconded by Member Yung Kim, and carried by unanimous vote. Mr. Wohlmuth noted that he would speak with the two members appointed after the meeting to answer any questions they have about the process. Mr. Wohlmuth presented awards to departing Youth Committee members Julien Bloch, Will Harvey, Jason Rosenblum, and Wes Wohlmuth and thanked them for their years of service to the community and for providing input and assisting the City Council to make decisions that affect youth. V. APPROVAL OF MINUTES A. MINUTES of the Youth Committee Meeting of April 1, 2013 Rec: Approve as presented. Upon motion by Member Woh/muth, and second by Member Sanford, the Minutes of April 1, 2013, were approved as presented. Motion carried by unanimous vote. 2 MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE MAY 7, 2013 VI. NEW BUSINESS None VII. OLD BUSINESS None VIII. CONTINUED BUSINESS A. REPORT of Subcommittee Assignments 1. Follow up on Youth/Senior Technology Training at the Fountains at the Carlotta Member Mehta relayed that he felt the Youth/Senior Technology Training went very well and that it should be held again next year. Ms. Lawrence indicated that in order for this event to be successful in the future, there would need to be more laptops to display trainings, more members would need to participate, and those participating would need to arrive prior to the event start time in order to setup. She noted that the residents at the Fountains were grateful for the training and thanked members Julien Bloch, Michelle Dan, Andrew Mehta, Daniel Sanford, Taylor Schmidman, and Wes Wohlmuth for their assistance the day of the event. 2. Update on Car Wash Fundraiser for Shelter From the Storm Member Kim reminded members that the car wash is scheduled for Saturday, May 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. He also mentioned that the Youth Committee would be collaborating with Riverside County's Youth Advisory Council (YAC) for this event. It was noted that a large turnout is expected due to tickets being sold in advance and as a result, the Committee needs as many members as possible to assist the day of the event. Member Roman Bloch relayed that $215 was raised in one hour by selling car wash tickets at the Shelter from the Storm's Annual Gala in Palm Springs. Ms. Lawrence thanked members Roman Bloch and Victoria Delapaz for attending on behalf of the Committee and also extended appreciation to Riverside County YAC Member Claire Stephenson for assisting as well. 3. Anti-Bullying Campaign Update Member Zannie Murphy noted that the Anti-Bullying Subcommittee would meet sometime in September to discuss presentations for elementary school students attending afterschool programs in Palm Desert. 4. Legislative Subcommittee Update Co-Chair Rosenblum said that he was pleased with the Legislative Subcommittee's progress so far. Ms. Lawrence indicated that the Subcommittee's revised recommendation on SB 194 was submitted to the 3 MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE MAY 7, 2013 City's Legislative Committee for review and that they would continue monitoring legislation. She also noted that chair and co-chair of the Legislative Subcommittee would need to be appointed next school year due to vacancies left by the current members. IX. REPORTS AND REMARKS A. COMMITTEE MEMBERS 1. Sister Cities Update Ms. Lawrence reminded members Cassidy Quilling and Taylor Schmidman to keep the Committee updated on plans for the Sister Cities Foundation's 9/11 Concert as the event is set to take place two days after the Youth Committee commences meeting again in September. B. STAFF Ms. Lawrence thanked members Michelle Dan, Victoria Delapaz, Jessica Kozlak, and Daniel Sanford for assisting with the Senior Inspiration Awards. Upon question regarding status of the Palm Desert Youth Committee's website, members Andrew Mehta and Don Sandoval-Heglund indicated that they were still working to update information. Ms. Lawrence announced that due to vacancies left by senior members, alternate members Michelle Dan, Victoria Delapaz, Emily Goldstone, and Samantha Sandoval-Heglund would be officially appointed to the Palm Desert Youth Committee at the City Council meeting on Thursday, May 9, 2013, at 4 p.m. At Ms. Lawrence's request, Member pon Sandoval-Heglund agreed to attend the May 9 City Council meeting to lead the Pledge of Allegiance and provide an update on the Car Wash Fundraiser. She also requested that Chair Julien Bloch attend the meeting to provide City Council with an update on the Youth/Senior Technology Training and also say a few words about his experience with serving on the Youth Committee. Ms. Lawrence conveyed that due to the Labor Day holiday on Monday, September 2, 2013, the next regular Youth Committee meeting will be adjourned to Monday, September 9, 2013. X.
