Ms. Lawrence recommended that the Committee appoint a member to
provide an update to City Council on recent and upcoming Youth
Committee activities such as the anti-bullying presentation to students at
Carter Elementary School, the Youth/Senior Technology Day, Game Night
with Atria Palm Desert, and the Car Wash Fundraiser.
Upon consensus by the Committee, Member Cory Hutchinson was appointed to

the March 13, 2014, City Council meeting.
B. FINALIZE details for Game Night
Co-Chair Schmidman reported that after several attempts, she was unable
to reach the program coordinator for Atria Hacienda. Ms. Lawrence
indicated that she was able to reach Ted with Atria Palm Desert who was
open to the idea of working with the Youth Committee on intergenerational
events. She suggested that the event be held one weekday in April at 6
p.m. and asked Co-Chair Schmidman to contact Ted to discuss the "game
night" idea further. Upon Co-Chair Schmidman's request for what night
during the week works best for the majority, it was noted that Tuesdays
and Thursday work best.

IX. REPORTS AND REMARKS
A. STAFF
1. Family Safety Festival
Ms. Lawrence announced that due to lack of enough interest, tne
Youth Committee will not be participating with helmet fitting at the
Police Department's Family Safety Festival on Saturday, March 22.
Councilmember Harnik noted that some time ago Pat Scully, formerly
with Mary Bono Mack's office, provided information to the Youth
Committee on the legislative process. She indicated that Ms. Scully
asked her to convey to the Youth Committee that there are
opportunities for internships working on Brian Nestande's
Congressional campaign. Councilmember Harnik added that
interning it is a good way to obtain class credits and letters of
recommendation for college applications. She asked all those
interested to contact Ms. Lawrence for more information. Ms.
Lawrence noted that she would gladly provide members with Ms.
Scully's contact information as well as contact information for a
representative of any other person running for office that members
would be interested in assisting.

B. COMMITTEE MEMBERS
1. Youth/Senior Technology Day Follow-up
Chair Mehta relayed that the event went very weli regardless of the
low number of senior attendees. Ms. Lawrence agreed that the event
was well received and that although members only assisted a few
seniors, those seniors will benefit from the Youth Committee's
assistance. She suggested that members continue with this event in
the years to come.
2. Car Wash Fundraiser
Member D. Sandoval-Heglund noted that members of the car wash
subcommittee agreed that the best time to meet and go over details
of the event would be Friday, March 7, around 3:15 p.m. Ms.
Lawrence noted that she would reserve a conference room and send
out a reminder via email to those members serving on the
subcommittee.
3. Anti-Bullying Subcommittee
Member H. Schmidman reported that the recent anti-bullying
presentation at Carter Elementary School went very well and that
they are looking to follow up with Lincoln Elementary School students
to see if the presentation they made in December had any impact.
4. Legislative Subcommittee
Upon question by Ms. Lawrence, members Mehta and Sanford
indicated that they would attend the next Legislative Review
Committee on Friday, March 7, at 3:30 p.m.
5. Palm Desert Sister Cities Foundation
Co-Chair Schmidman reported that she and Member H. Schmidman
attended a special Sister Cities Foundation Board meeting to discuss
fundraising earlier in the day. She added that members Quilling and
Murphy plan to attend the next regular meeting on Wednesday.
Upon question by Ms. Lawrence regarding how many meetings youth
representatives can miss during the year, Member Quilling indicated
that because they are part of the quorum required to hold the
meetings, it is important that they do not miss any of the bimonthly
meetings during the year.

6. Sustainability Committee
Member Quilling reported that the Sustainability Committee is
currently working with other cities on the plastic bag issue. She
noted that the next meeting won't be for another few months so it
would be a good idea to appoint another Youth Committee member
to attend the next meeting with her since she will be graduating this
year. She added that the Sustainability Committee would like to
incorporate the educational system of sustainability into the high
school and may be interested in using the Youth Committee to assist
in this process. Ms. Lawrence noted that appointment for this
designation will take place at the April Youth Committee meeting.
7. Youth Committee Website
Ms. Lawrence thanked those members that provided her with
feedback on the website content and announced that the Palm
Desert Youth Committee website, www.pdvouthcommittee.orq,
should now be up and running.
