APPROVAL OF MINUTES A. MINUTES of the October 6, 2014, Youth Committee meeting Upon motion by Member Bloch, second by Member M. Dan, and 13-0-0-2 vote of the Youth Committee (AYES: Bloch, Chen, M. Dan, P. Dan, Hutchinson, Kim, Kozlak, Murphy, D. Sandoval-Heglund, S. Sandoval-Heglund, Schmidman, and Seiberg; NOES: None; ABSTENTIONS: None; ABSENT: Chaplin and Goldstone), the October 6, 2014, Minutes were approved as presented. VI. NEW BUSINESS None VII. OLD BUSINESS None VIII. CONTINUED BUSINESS None IX. REPORTS AND REMARKS A. COUNCIL MEMBERS Mayor Van Tanner thanked members that assisted with the Y-Be-Fit Palm Desert Challenge on Sunday, October 12, 2014. He then presented appointed members with holiday gift cards and thanked them for their service to the City and the community. B. STAFF Ms. Lawrence reminded appointed members that they are only permitted to miss two Youth Committee meetings per calendar year and that a third absence constitutes an automatic resignation. She noted that if a member is asked to resign from their appointed positon due to lack of ineeting attendance they are still welcome to serve as an alternate. She announced that alternate member Andrew Olson will be appointed to the position recently vacated by Victoria Delapaz who regretfully decided to step down from the Committee due to other commitments. Ms. Schwartz Glickman noted that the City will be holding public meetings at Desert Willow Golf Resort, on December 4 and February 5, as part of 2 MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE NOVEMBER 3, 2014 the General Plan process. Members Chen, M. Dan, Hutchinson, and Schmidman volunteered to attend the meetings on behalf of the Youth Committee. C. COMMITTEE MEMBERS 1. Update to City Council a. Thursday, November 13, 2014 Upon general concurrence of the Committee, Member Sanford was selected to lead the Pledge of Allegiance and provide an update on Youth Committee activities at the November 13, 2014, City Council meeting. b. Thursday, December 11, 2014 Upon general concurrence of the Committee, Member Bloch was selected to lead the Pledge of Allegiance and provide an update on Youth Committee activities at the December 11, 2014, City Council meeting. 2. Events a. Update —Y-Be-Fit Palm Desert Challenge (Mini-Triathlon) Ms. Lawrence relayed appreciation from the Family YMCA of the Desert to members Bloch, M. Dan, P. Dan, Hutchinson, Kim, Kozlak, Murphy, and S. Sandoval-Heglund for assisting with the first Y-Be-Fit Palm Desert Challenge. Upon discussion regarding future events, members suggested that participants be sprayed with water before the event to help the color stick to their shirts, that participants should be issued white shirts, and that music should be played at the various color stations. b. Update — Golf Cart Parade Ms. Lawrence noted that Katie Stice with the Palm Desert Area Chamber of Commerce and Rob Ballew with the Family YMCA of the Desert asked her to relay their appreciation to members Bloch, M. Dan, P. Dan, Goldstone, Hutchinson, L. Kim, Y. Kim, Kozlak, D. Sandoval-Heglund, S. Sandoval- Heglund, Sanford, Schmidman, Shannazarian, Shaw, and Seiberg for their assistance with the 2014 Golf Cart Parade. She added that in appreciation for the Committee's participation, Katie Stice arranged for cakes to be delivered by 3 MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE NOVEMBER 3, 2014 "Nothing Bundt Cakes" for tonighYs meeting. Ms. Lawrence also thanked Member Bloch for turning in a $20.00 tip he received and indicated that the money would be used to purchase refreshments for the December meeting. c. Wreath Lighting Ms. Lawrence circulated a sign-up sheet for members' assistance with the City's Wreath Lighting event on Friday, December 5, 2014, at 5 p.m. She noted that members woufd be helping kids decorate sugar cookies and that a couple members may be needed to light the wreath. d. Lincoln Afterschool Program Holiday Party Upon discussion regarding dates for the Lincoln Holiday Party, it was decided that the party would be held on Monday, December 15, 2014, at 3:30 p.m. She noted that at least two members would be needed for each of the five stations and circulated a sign-up sheet for the event. e. Youth/Senior Technology Event No update f. Game Night No update g. Car Wash Fundraiser No update h. Senior Inspiration Awards Ms. Lawrence relayed that this event will be held on April 10, 2015, and that more information will follow. i. Palm Desert Charter Middle School Afterschool Program Presentation No update j. Local Arts Showcase No update 4 MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE NOVEMBER 3, 2014 k. Youth/Senior Prom No update 3. Youth Committee Projects a. Veterans History Project Ms. Lawrence noted that she would pass along the contact information for the Veteran's History Project to Ms. Schwartz Glickman in the event that the Committee would like to move forward with it at a later date. 4. Youth Committee Subcommittee Updates a. Anti-bullying Subcommittee Members decided to provide an anti-bullying presentation to Carter Elementary on Tuesday, November 18, 2014, at 4 p.m., and wait to present to the other schools sometime next year. Ms. Lawrence noted that she would contact members to schedule a meeting prior to Carter's presentation. b. Legislative Review Committee No report c. Citizens' Sustainability Committee As a result of Victoria Delapaz' recent resignation, Member Seiberg was appointed to attend Citizens' Sustainability Committee meetings on behalf of the Youth Committee. Member Kozlak reported that the Committee has been discussing parking lot shade tree standards. Ms. Schwartz Glickman noted that the next meeting would be held on Monday, February 23, 2015, at 2 p.m., and encouraged members Kozlak and Seiberg to bring forth ideas and participate in discussions at the meetings. d. Palm Desert Sister Cities Foundation Member Schmidman reported that one of Palm Desert's sister cities, Gisborne, New Zealand, is participating in a "Gigatown" competition and encouraged members to vote using the link that Ms. Lawrence recently emailed and posted on Facebook. 5 MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE NOVEMBER 3, 2014 She noted that winning this completion would help increase technology within their region of the country.
