HomeMy WebLinkAboutPrclmatn - National Mentor MonthWhereas, 2014 marks the 12th anniversary of National Mentor Month; and Whereas, in the Coachella Valley and across the nation there is a month -long outreach campaign with the theme "Mentoring Works" that focuses attention on the need for mentors to assure a brighter future for our young people; and Whereas, for 16 years the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Desert is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better; and Whereas, in 2013 Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Desert served over 500 children in both their Community -based and Site -based mentoring programs;and Whereas, research has shown that Volunteer Mentors can play a powerful role In reducing drug abuse and youth violence as well as boosting academic achievement. Mentors help to build young people's character and confidence, expand their universe, and help them navigate a path to success. Now, Therefore, I, Van G. Tanner, Mayor of the City of Palm Desert, California, Do Hereby Proclaim the Month of January, 2014, as National Mentor Month in the City of Palm Desert and encourage our citizens to become a mentor, being someone who matters to someone who matters, and thereby helping a young person grow and succeed.
