REQUEST: AUTHORIZATION TO DECLARE THE CITY'S TWO 2004 BMW
1150RT-P MOTORCYCLES AS SURPLUS AND PROCEED WITH
DISPOSAL VIA AUCTION.

Recommendation
By Minute Motion, declare the City's two 2004 BMW 1150RT-P Motorcycles
as surplus (V.I.N. WB10499AX4ZE93224 & WB10499A84ZE91472) and
authorize auctioning these vehicles by Ken Porter Auctions (Carson, CA).
Commission Recommendation
The Palm Desert Public Safety Commission did not have a meeting in June and could
not provide a recommendation on this matter.
Background
Two Palm Desert Police Department motorcycles (2004 BMW 1150RT-P) that are
identified below were recently replaced with two new models. These 2004 motors were
taken out of service and all emergency and communication equipment was removed.
The motorcycles are currently located at the Palm Desert City Yard and the Police
Department recommends their disposal as surplus property.
2004 BMW 1150RT-P (VIN # WB10499AX4ZE93224), CA #E21 L66.
This motorcycle has been non -operational since 2013 when the alternator belt broke
and was not repaired due to the expectation of this motorcycle being replaced. The
alternator belt is the only known problem with this particular motorcycle. The last
service (clutch cylinder) for this motorcycle was on March 13, 2013. The current
mileage on this motorcycle is 69,991.
2004 BMW 1150RT-P (VIN # WB10499A84ZE91472), CA #E08L34.
This motorcycle was taken out of service in January 2014 and was running well. This
unit was assigned to Sgt. Adams as a back-up motorcycle. It was last serviced (new
side stand & front tire) on October 19, 2013. The current mileage on this motorcycle is
49,121.

Fiscal Analysis
Should the City Council concur with staff's recommendation any funds collected from
the auction will be deposited in the City's General Fund. Please note that Ken Porter
Auctions previously collected a 5% commission and charges for vehicle transportation.
