Recommendation
By Minute Motion,
Approve Annual Palm Desert Charter Middle School Panther 5K Run/Walk on
Sunday, January 25, 2015, including road closures between Highway 74 and
Portola Avenue on El Paseo.
Discussion
For the past two years, Palm Desert Charter Middle School (PDCMS) has held their
annual Panther 5K Run/Walk behind PDCMS on Magnesia Falls between Deep Canyon
and Monterey. This event has been very successful in raising funds for the school while
encouraging adults, kids, and families to participate in a healthy activity.
However, due to the public safety impact of closing Portola Avenue at Magnesia Falls,
staff advised PDCMS that an alternate course must be identified for 2015 and offered
the City's certified course on El Paseo as an option as long as the event is held on a
Sunday with road closures open by 10 a.m. As a result, PDCMS submitted a request to
hold their third annual Panther 5K Run/Walk on the City's certified course on El Paseo
between Highway 74 and Portola Avenue (see attached course map) on Sunday,
January 25, 2015, from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. (Actual run time from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.)
At its meeting of April 25, 2013, City Council approved a limited number of events that
require road closures to be held on El Paseo. The annual Panther 5K, if approved,
would fall into the number of allotted events. In addition, on June 12, 2014, staff
presented the event details to the El Paseo Business Improvement District Board of

Directors who unanimously agreed that the event would have no negative impact to the
businesses on El Paseo as long as road closures opened by 10 a.m.
Community impact as a result of the street closures will be minimal as no major roads
will be closed and the traffic barricades should be removed by 10 a.m. Additionally,
sworn police officers will be required at designated locations and Citizens on Patrol
members may be utilized along the route.
Staff recommends approval of the third annual Palm Desert Charter Middle School
Panther 5K Run/Walk on January 25, 2015, including road closures between Highway
74 and Portola Avenue on El Paseo.
Fiscal Analysis
There is no fiscal impact to the City associated with this request. Palm Desert Charter
Middle School will be responsible for all costs associated with the event.
