Authorize staff to submit an application for recertification to the state forester for the City to maintain the Tree City USA designation; and 2. Authorize the Mayor to execute the application. Backqround In 2012, the City applied for and received the Tree City USA designation from the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. An annual application for recertification is required in order to maintain the designation. The recertification process is much less involved than the original application in that we only need to certify that we continue to maintain all of the necessary required components. Those components are the on-going tree maintenance activities, the City's Tree Maintenance Ordinance, and the City-sponsored Arbor Day celebration. Staff is now in a position to submit an application for recertification of the Tree City USA designation. There are no fees associated with maintaining this designation, but many benefits of remaining a Tree City include creating a framework for action, education, a positive public image, and citizen pride.
