HomeMy WebLinkAboutFY 2014-15 - Postage - BrightSideCITY OF PALM DESERT STAFF REPORT REQUEST: APPROVAL OF $33,000 EXPENDITURE FOR POSTAGE FOR THE BRIGHTSIDE NEWSLETTER FOR FISCAL YEAR 2014/2015 SUBMITTED BY: David Hermann, Management Analyst CONTRACTOR: United States Postal Service Palm Desert, CA 92260 DATE: May 8, 2014 Recommendation By Minute Motion: Approve the expenditure of $33,000 for the United States Postal Service to cover a year's worth of postage for mailing of the bimonthly BrightSide newsletter. Funds have been included in the proposed budget for 2014/2015 in Account No. 110-4417-414-3026. Backaround The BrightSide newsletter is mailed six times a year to approximately 35,000 Palm Desert households and businesses at a current bulk rate of 15.3 cents per piece. The cost for mailing the newsletter is expected to average just over $5,400 per issue based on current U.S. Postal Service rates and past rate increases. The Postal Service typically revises its rates upward each year in January. These annual increases have ranged between .4 cents and .7 cents. The proposed expenditure accounts for a .7 cent increase in January 2015. Fiscal Analysis Approval of this expenditure will ensure delivery of the City's newsletter. The fiscal impact is $33,000 to the general fund. Funds have been included in the proposed budget for 2013/2014; Account No. 110-4417-414-3026.
