PRESENTATIONS V[:RIFIF.D BY: DK Original on File with City Clerk's Office MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE APRIL 7, 2014 A. Presentation by Patricia Scully on Political Campaigning Ms. Lawrence introduced Ms. Patricia Scully from Congressional Candidate Brian Nestande's office. She added that Ms. Scully is a former City of Palm Desert employee and that during her time with the City she oversaw the creation of the Palm Desert Youth Committee and served as the former advisor. Ms. Scully stated that when the Youth Committee began they had only four members. After extensive discussion on the subject of political campaigning, Ms. Scully indicated that there are two opportunities for high school students to assist with the campaign; one is to volunteer and one is to intern. She described each position and asked Member Cory Hutchinson, who is currently serving as an intern for the campaign, to provide information about his experience. Member Hutchinson noted that the experience so far has been very interesting and indicated that he is currently polling people over the phone and recently began precinct walking. He explained that class credits are available for interning as long as certain school and class requirements are met and encouraged others to participate citing that political campaign internships look great on college applications no matter what subject members plan to study. Ms. Lawrence thanked Ms. Scully for providing such an informative presentation and noted that members can contact her directly if they would like to obtain Ms. Scully's contact information. V. APPROVAL OF MINUTES A. MINUTES of the March 3, 2014, Youth Committee meeting Upon motion by Member Quilling, second by Member D. Sandoval-Heglund, and 12- 0-1-2 vote of the Youth Committee (AYES: Chen, Dan, Delapaz, Goldstone, Kim, Kozlak, Murphy, Quilling, D. Sandoval-Heglund, S. Sandoval-Heglund, Sanford, and Schmidman; NOES: None; ABSTENTIONS: Bloch; ABSENT: Chisem and Mehta), the March 3, 2014, Minutes were approved as presented. VI. NEW BUSINESS A. APPOINTMENT of Member to lead the Pledge of Allegiance and provide an update on Youth Committee activities at the Apri124, 2014, City Council Meeting Ms. Lawrence suggested that someone from the car wash fundraiser subcommittee attend to provide information on the event. 2 MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE APRIL 7, 2014 Upon consensus by the Committee, Member Michelle Dan was appointed to lead the Pledge of Allegiance and provide an update on Youth Cammittee activities at the April 24, 2014, City Council meeting. VII. OLD BUSINESS None VIII. CONTINUED BUSINESS None IX. REPORTS AND REMARKS A. STAFF 1. Appointments for the 2014/15 School Year Ms. Lawrence indicated that because five senior members will be leaving the Committee in June, appointment of five alternate members will take place at the City Council meeting on Thursday, May 22, at 4 p.m. She noted that announcement of appointments will be made at the May Youth Committee meeting and reminded members that order of appointment is based on points accrued through meeting and event attendance and participation. 2. Update on Atria Palm Desert Activities Upon consensus by the Committee, Game Night at Atria Palm Desert was scheduled for Tuesday, April 22, at 6 p.m. Ms. Lawrence reported that she would be meeting with Ted at Atria Palm Desert on Wednesday, April 16, at 3 p.m., to discuss the veteran video interview project. Upon request for votunteers to attend the meeting with her, members Goldstone, Sanford, H. Schmidman, and T. Schmidman said they would attend. Member Sanford noted that Chair Mehta would most likely want to attend as well. B. COMMITTEE MEMBERS 1. Game Night Discussed under Section IX— Reports and Remarks, Item A-2 2. Car Wash Fundraiser Ms. Lawrence confirmed that the car wash fundraiser is schedule for Saturday, May 17, and that the Riverside County Youth Advisory Council (YAC) would again be collaborating on the event this year. She 3 MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE APRIL 7, 2014 added that Principal Hicks agreed to ailow presale tickets to be sold at the front office at the high school. The subcommittee scheduled the next planning meeting for Monday, April 14, at 5:15 p.m. 3. Anti-Bullying Subcommittee Member Murphy relayed that the subcommittee would be holding a follow-up presentation for the students at Lincoln Elementary School's Afterschoo( Program on Thursday, April 17, at 3:30 p.m. 4. Legislative Subcommittee Member Sanford reported that he and Chair Mehta were unable to attend the Legislative Review Committee's last meeting. Ms. Lawrence indicated that since members Mehta and Sanford would be graduating this year, another member (or members) should be designated to attend future meetings of the City's Legislative Review Committee to offer the Youth Committee's assistance and report back on anything of importance. She said that designation will take place at the May meeting. 5. Palm Desert Sister Cities Foundation None 6. Sustainability Committee Member Quilling reported that the Sustainability Committee is hoping to involve the Youth Committee on a potential informational and educational campaign concerning the City's plastic bag ordinance. She added that since she would be graduating this year, another member (or members) should be identified to take her place as youth liaison to the Sustainability Committee. She added that meetings are typically held quarterly and anyone interested must be able to attend each meeting. She noted that the next meeting is scheduled to take place on Monday, May 12, at 2 p.m. Upon general consensus of the Committee, members Dan and Kozlak were appointed to this position. X.
