ORAL COMMUNICATIONS MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE OCTOBER 6, 2014 None IV. PRESENTATIONS A. Presentation on the Y-Be-Fit Palm Desert Challenge (Mini-Triathlon) Mr. Rob Ballew with the Family YMCA of the Desert indicated that he is looking for 10-12 volunteers to assist with the Y-Be-Fit Palm Desert Challenge reverse mini-triathlon on Sunday, October 12, 2014. He encouraged those interested to attend the volunteer coordination meeting at the Palm Desert Aquatic Center on Thursday, October 9, 2014, at 4 p.m. He relayed that in exchange for their efforts, volunteers would receive t-shirts, early lunch the day of the event, and a free swim pass for the Aquatic Center. Mr. Ballew noted that while there are many volunteer opportunities beginning as early as 5:30 a.m., the most popular one seems to be throwing color for the 1 K color run. He conveyed that as long as the Youth Committee promised to promote the event to their friends and family and through social media, he will see that they are assigned the job of throwing color. B. Presentation on the Golf Cart Parade Ms. Katie Stice with the Palm Desert Area Chamber of Commerce provided details on the 50th annual Golf Carat Parade scheduled for Sunday, October 26, 2014. She relayed that the Youth Committee's assistance with set-up and the senior seating area again this year would be greatly appreciated. She outlined different shifts for the event and circulated a sign-up sheet. V. APPROVAL OF MINUTES A. MINUTES of the September 8, 2014, Youth Committee meeting Upon motion by Member Roman Bloch, second by Member Michelle Dan, and 14-0-0-1 vote of the Youth Committee (AYES: Bloch, Chaplin, Chen, M. Dan, P. Dan, Goldstone, Hutchinson, Kim, Kozlak, Murphy, D. Sandoval-Heglund, S. Sandoval- Heglund, Schmidman, and Seiberg; NOES: None; ABSTENTIONS: None; ABSENT: Delapaz), the September 8, 2014, Minutes were approved as presented. VI. NEW BUSINESS None VII. OLD BUSINESS None 2 MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE OCTOBER 6, 2014 VIII. CONTINUED BUSINESS None IX. REPORTS AND REMARKS A, COUNCIL MEMBERS Councilmember Harnik invited members to attend the Senate debate at the lndian Wells Theater focated at Californian State University, San Bernardino's Palm Desert campus directly after the meeting. She added that another Congressional debate may take place there that evening as well. B. STAFF Ms. Lawrence invited members to attend a fundraiser at Five Guys in Rancho Mirage benefitting Palm Desert High School's Parent Teacher Organization on Wednesday, October 15, 2014, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Councilmember Harnik added that a fundraiser at Barnes and Noble benefitting the Palm Desert High School Foundation was currently underway. Ms. Lawrence regretfully announced her departure as advisor to the Youth Committee effective January 1, 2015, and relayed that staff member Deborah Schwartz Glickman would be taking over. Ms. Schwartz Gfickman noted that she is looking forward to working with the Committee and getting to know the members. C. COMMITTEE MEMBERS 1. Youth Committee Updates to City Council a. Thursday, October 23, 2014 Upon general concurrence of the Committee, Member Hutchinson was selected to lead the Pledge of Allegiance and provide an update on Youth Committee activities at the October 23, 2014, City Council meeting. 2. Youth Committee Events a. Y-Be-Fit Palm Desert Challenge (Mini-Triathlon) on Sunday, October 12, 2014 See Section IV. Presentations, Item A. 3 MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE OCTOBER 6, 2014 b. Golf Cart Parade on Sunday, October 26, 2014 See Section IV. Presentations, Item B. c. Wreath Lighting on Friday, December 8, 2014 Ms. Lawrence noted that the Youth Committee was requested to assist with the City's Wreath Lighting event scheduled for Friday, December 8, 2014. Upon question as to how to improve upon this year's event, it was recommended that members be given larger tables for the cookie decorating stations and that the stations be held out of the way of other activities. d. Lincoln Afterschool Program Holiday Party Ms. Lawrence reported that Ms. Moll from Lincoln Elementary School's Afterschool Program sent her some possible dates for the holiday party. She noted that details for this event would be finalized at the December meeting. e. Palm Desert Charter Middle School Afterschool Program Presentation Ms. Lawrence indicated that Ms. Bohm from Palm Desert Charter Middle School's "Bridges" Afterschool Program requested that the Youth Committee provide a presentation to eighth grade students about high school in May instead of December. She noted that details would be discussed at a later date. f. Youth/Senior Technology Event No update g. Game Night No update h. Car Wash Fundraiser No update i. Senior Inspiration Awards 4 MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE OCTOBER 6, 2014 Councilmember Harnik relayed that the Senior Inspiration Awards Luncheon would be held in April 2015 and noted that the Youth Committee's assistance with the event would be greatly appreciated. j. Local Arts Showcase No update k. Youth/Senior Prom No update 3. Youth Committee Projects a. Veterans History Project Upon Ms. Lawrence's suggestion, it was decided that a meeting to discuss the Veteran's History Project would be scheduled for sometime in November. 4. Youth Committee Subcommittee Updates a. Anti-bullying Subcommittee Chair Murphy reported that the subcommittee met last month to discuss goals and activities for the year. She indicated that they'd like to provide presentations to all four elementary schools in Palm Desert this school year and that they are looking for ways to reach out to students at the middle school as well. Upon discussion regarding working with Palm Desert High School, Ms. Lawrence relayed that teacher Dennis Devlin had spoken with her about the Committee providing a presentation to his class and it was noted that Assistant Principal Renee Iniguez was the contact for the upcoming assembly. Ms. Lawrence added that Palm Desert Mayor Van Tanner accepted an invitation to join the "Mayors Campaign to End Bullying" and has requested that the Youth Committee find innovative ways to move this campaign forward. b. Legislative Review Committee Member M. Dan noted that the Legislative Review Committee is on break until January 2015. c. Citizens' Sustainability Committee 5 MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE OCTOBER 6, 2014 Member Kozlak relayed that the Citizens' Sustainability Committee is currently working on the plastic bag ban and said that she would provide more information on this after she attends the October meeting. Ms. Lawrence added that the Palm Desert Visitor Information Center located on San Pablo near EI Paseo is giving away free reusable Chicobags to interested Palm Desert residents. d. Palm Desert Sister Cities Foundation Member Schmidman reported that the luncheon in honor of Councilmember Jean Benson was a great success and a nice way to honor all that she has done for our community.
