Settle in 1929 at the start of the Great Depression with the goal of relieving the economic hardships suffered by retired teachers, and has since become a leading advocacy group for providing teachers with sufficient retirement income; and Whereas, the California Retired Teachers Association Roadrunner Division 43 provides continuing support to active and future teachers in the Coachella Valley Unified School District, Desert Sands Unified School District, and Palo Verde Unified School District with grants, scholarships, donations, and volunteering in their communities; and Whereas, last year Roadrunner Division 43 members logged 27,295 volunteer hours serving their communities in a host of activities representing a dollar value of $709,670; and Whereas, Roadrunner Division 43 gave out seven $1,000 scholarships to local high school students in May 2014. Now, Therefore, I, Van G. Tanner, Mayor of the City of Palm Desert, California, Along With the Entire City Council, Do Hereby Proclaim the week of November 2-8, 2014, as California Retired Teachers Week in the City of Palm Desert in recognition of the vital role retired teachers fulfill in every community in California, and to honor their ongoing commitment to all teachers. In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and have caused the Official Seal of the City of Palm Desert, California, to be affixed this 9th day of October. 2014.
