HomeMy WebLinkAboutPrsntatn - Fire Prevention WeekWhereas, the City of Palm Desert is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting our city; and Whereas, fire is a serious public safety concern, both locally and nationally, and homes are where people are at greatest risk from fire. According to the latest research from the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), home fires kill nearly 3,000 people in the United States each year, and the vast majority of home fire deaths are preventable; and Whereas, having a working smoke alarm in the home cuts the risk of dying in a fire in half. On average each year, 3 out of 5 home fire deaths result where there are either no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms; and Whereas, Palm Desert's first responders are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire deaths and injuries through prevention and protection education. Palm Desert's residents are responsive to public education measures and are able to take personal steps to increase their safety from fire, especially in their homes; and Whereas, the theme of Fire Prevention Week 2014 is "Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives — Test Yours Every Month!" Now, Therefore, I, Van G. Tanner, Mayor of the City of Palm Desert, California, Along With the Entire City Council, Do Hereby Proclaim the week of October 5-11, 2014, as Fire Prevention Week in the City of Palm Desert and urge all residents to install smoke alarms, test all smoke alarms each month, and support the many public safety activities and efforts of Palm Desert's fire and emergency services during Fire Prevention Week. In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and have caused the Official Seal of the City of Palm Desert, California, to be affixed this 25th day of September, 2014.
