HomeMy WebLinkAboutPrsntatn - Fire Prevention WeekWhereas, the City of Palm Desert is committed to ensuring the
safety and security of all those living in and visiting our city; and
Whereas, fire is a serious public safety concern, both locally and
nationally, and homes are where people are at greatest risk from fire.
According to the latest research from the nonprofit National Fire
Protection Association (NFPA), home fires kill nearly 3,000 people in the
United States each year, and the vast majority of home fire deaths are
preventable; and
Whereas, having a working smoke alarm in the home cuts the risk
of dying in a fire in half. On average each year, 3 out of 5 home fire
deaths result where there are either no smoke alarms or no working
smoke alarms; and
Whereas, Palm Desert's first responders are dedicated to reducing
the occurrence of home fires and home fire deaths and injuries through
prevention and protection education. Palm Desert's residents are
responsive to public education measures and are able to take personal
steps to increase their safety from fire, especially in their homes; and
Whereas, the theme of Fire Prevention Week 2014 is "Working
Smoke Alarms Save Lives — Test Yours Every Month!"
Now, Therefore, I, Van G. Tanner, Mayor of the City of Palm
Desert, California, Along With the Entire City Council, Do Hereby
Proclaim the week of October 5-11, 2014, as
Fire Prevention Week
in the City of Palm Desert and urge all residents to install smoke alarms,
test all smoke alarms each month, and support the many public safety
activities and efforts of Palm Desert's fire and emergency services during
Fire Prevention Week.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and have
caused the Official Seal of the City of Palm Desert,
California, to be affixed this 25th day of September, 2014.
