Councilmember Jan Harnik awarded senior members Chisem, Mehta, Quilling,
Sanford, and T. Schmidman certificates of appreciation for their service and thanked
them for all the work they have done for the community during their tenure on the
Youth Committee.

V. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
A. MINUTES of the May 5, 2014, Youth Committee meeting
Upon motion by Member Chen, second by Member Quilling, and 11-0-0-4 vote of the
Youth Committee (AYES: Chen, Chisem, Dan, Goldstone, Kozlak, Mehta, Murphy, Quilling,
D. Sandoval-Heglund, Sanford, and Schmidman; NOES: None; ABSTENTIONS: None;
ABSENT: Bloch, Delapaz, Kim, and S. Sandoval-Heglund), the May 5, 2014, Minutes were
approved as presented.

IX. REPORTS AND REMARKS
A. STAFF
1. September Meeting
Ms. Lawrence reported that because Labor Day falls on the first Monciay
in September, the next Youth Committee meeting will take place on
Monday, September 8, 2014. She explained that the City Clerk will be
present at the September meeting to swear in new members and
provide a presentation on the Brown Act and Parliamentary Procedure.
She added that elections for chair and co-chair for the 2014/15 school
year will also take place at the September meeting.
Ms. Lawrence thanked the members for all of their work this year and
noted that she felt that their efforts have brought the Youth Committee to
a greater level. Councilmember Harnik conveyed that she is honored to
have watched the Youth Committee grow and that members have done
a great job with their community programs and events.
B. COMMITTEE MEMBERS
1. Veterans History Project
Upon discussion regarding direction of the Veterans History Project, due
to the project being more entailed than what was originally anticipated

(i.e., requirements for a 30 minute unedited interview, various waivers to
be signed by veterans and interviewers, etc.), it was decided that
members would wait to work on the project until the 2014/15 school
year.
2. Car Wash Fundraiser
Member M. Dan reported that the car wash fundraiser was very
successful and that Swiss Donuts, Starbucks, and Chipotle alt donated
items which helped raise additional funds. Ms. Lawrence added that the
Miramonte Resort in Indian Wells donated towels to help dry cars. She
went on to say that $875.21 was raised through car wash presale tickets
and during the car wash and noted that Supervisor John Benoit donated
an additional $125.00 bringing the total raised for the Jill Grant Memorial
Scholarship Fund to $1,000.21. She relayed that last year the
Committee raised approximately $775.00 for Shelter from the Storm and
in 2012 they raised around $300.00 for CASA of Riverside County
(Court Appointed Special Advocates).
Ms. Lawrence thanked members for all of their hard work in making the
event a success and noted that the Palm Desert High School
Foundation asked her to relay their appreciation for the donation as well.
She added that Jill GranYs brother attended the car wash and was very
moved by the gesture.
Upon suggestion by Councilmember Harnik, Ms. Lawrence agreed to
work with the Committee to incorporate photos from their events into
their presentations for the Palm Desert City Council.
4. Anti-Bullying Subcommittee
Member Murphy indicated that she recently spoke with Principal
Lehman from Washington Charter School and he would like to meet with
the members regarding anti-bullying efforts on Tuesday, June 10, 2014.
After identifying a few volunteers to attend the meeting, Member Murphy
said that she would confirm the meeting time with everyone via email.
Ms. Lawrence asked that she copy her on the email so that she can
attend as well.
Ms. Lawrence noted that the next Anti-Bullying Subcommittee meeting
would not take place until after the September Youth Committee
meeting.
5. Legislative Review Committee
Member Sanford indicated that he would be attending the Legislative
Review Committee meeting on Friday, June 6, along with members
Chen and M. Dan. Ms. Lawrence mentioned that Mayor Van Tanner

asked her to extend his appreciation to members Mehta and Sanford for
their efforts with the Legislative Review Committee over the last year.
6. Palm Desert Sister Cities FoundatiQn Board
Member H. Schmidman reported that the next Sister Cities Foundation
Board meeting is scheduled to take place in July. She noted however
that she would not be able to attend the meeting as she will be attending
a Sister Cities conference in San Jose at that time.
7. Citizens' Sustainability Committee
Member Quilling reported that she and members M. Dan and Kozlak
attended the May 12 Citizens' Sustainability Committee meeting. Upon
discussion regarding the role that the Citizens' Sustainability Committee
would eventually like the Youth Committee to play with regard to
environmental sustainability, Member Quilling indicated that they would
like the Youth Committee to get involved with bringing awareness to
schoois on topics such as water conservation and the issue with plastic
bags.
Ms. Lawrence reminded members M. Dan and Kozlak that the next
Citizens' Sustainability Committee meeting is scheduled for August 11,
and assured that they would receive an agenda for the meeting in
advance.
X. ADJOURNMENT
Upon consensus of the Committee, Chair Mehta adjourned the meeting at 6:18 p.m.
