A. RECEIVE PRESENTATION AND RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF
DISPLAY FURNITURE FOR THE RETAIL AREAS OF THE NEW
VISITOR INFORMATION CENTER
Ms. Aylaian presented depictions of the fixtures and explained that in
the retail area, there will be three large display fixtures. The large
display fixtures are most significant and need to be integrated with the
building architecture. Smaller fixtures will be used to highlight
seasonal merchandise and small items.
Ms. Aylaian stated that after unsuccessful attempts to locate suitable
off -the -shelf fixtures, it was determined that because the retail space is
so prominent, and in order to do justice to the building's architecture, a
specialty retail display fixture designer and fabricator was warranted.
A nationwide search was undertaken, and F & B was ultimately
selected based on their qualifications and because their design
approach was compatible with the architecture of the building. The
factors that F & B considered in designing the large display fixtures
included the volume of the space, the ceiling angles, the lighting
needs, the desire to use banners for marketing purposes, and the
types of merchandise to be displayed. The types of materials and
colors used in other areas of the building were also incorporated.
Mr. Drell asked about the dimensions of the fixture and the anticipated
methods of displaying the merchandise. Ms. Aylaian provided the
dimensions and discussed the types of merchandise such as t-shirts,
sweatshirts, and books and how it was anticipated that they would be
displayed. Ms. Gomez added that she and Ms. Aylaian had worked
together during the design process, and that she liked the versatility of

the fixture for the intended merchandise to be displayed. She
explained that the top shelves could be used for display purposes
because they are at eye level, and the space toward the bottom could
hold various sizes and types of stock.
Mr. McCarthy asked about the critical path relating to having the
fixtures available when the VIC opens. Ms. Aylaian replied that
fabrication would take about a month and that she wanted to secure
the Committee's approval by the first week in May and submit the
recommendation to the Agency Board soon thereafter.
Mr. Crites asked about the total cost of the fixtures. Ms. Aylaian
replied that the entire fixture package would be less than $45,000 and
includes design and fabrication for brochure racks, the large display
fixtures, separate smaller displays, and installation. There are 10 to 15
pieces in total.
Discussion ensued regarding positioning of books and merchandise on
the fixtures. Mr. Crites commented that books should be displayed at
eye level. Ms. Gomez concurred, but stated that actual location of
displayed merchandise had not been finalized. Ms. Aylaian stated that
there would be a two -week time period following approval by the
Committee in early May in which to work with Ms. Gomez to resolve
the book display to her satisfaction.
Mr. Crites asked if there was going to be a display of items from our
two Sister Cities. Ms. Gomez replied that one of the alcoves was
specifically identified for incorporating items from the Sister Cities, but
nothing had yet been obtained. She stated that she would contact
both cities to begin the process of determining what was to be
displayed. Ms. Aylaian commented that one of the goals in designing
the display fixtures was to achieve flexibility and that merchandise or
displays from the Sister Cities could be accommodated.
Motion to forward the furniture plan to the Agency Board as
presented was made by Mr. McCarthy, seconded by Mr. Leo, and
unanimously approved.

IX. OLD BUSINESS
APRIL 27, 2005
A. RECEIVE AND REVIEW A PRESENTATION ON THE BUILDING
FURNISHINGS SELECTED FOR THE PUBLIC AREAS AND OFFICE
SPACES OF THE NEW VISITOR INFORMATION CENTER
As follow up from the prior meeting, Ms. Aylaian reported that the
architect had visited various showrooms in Los Angeles to inspect the
furniture for the VIC. Based on their visit, they are recommending
using synthetic fabrics for durability and ease of care. All of the fabrics
now presented are rated for commercial use and will be the same
color, tone, and texture as the originally presented fabrics.
Also, based on the architect's visit, it is recommended that the sliding
tray originally intended for use on the theatre benches be eliminated
due to instability.
The revised recommendation for alcove seating is to use side chairs in
addition to stools. The seat cushions will be upholstered in a bronze
colored, synthetic leather fabric and will provide comfortable seating.
Motion to approve the furnishing for the public areas and office
spaces as presented made by Mr. Leo, seconded by Mr. Lilly, and
unanimously approved.
B. REVIEW THE MODIFICATIONS MADE TO THE MONUMENT
SIGNAGE TEXT AND HEIGHT
Ms. Aylaian requested that this item be continued until the next
meeting because the requested exhibits that will show the proposed
lettering were not yet ready.
Mr. Bartlett stated that he understood that the order on the signage
had been changed and wanted to find out if copy for the Cuistot
Restaurant portion of the sign was needed yet and if the font selected
would be compatible with their logo. There was much discussion
regarding fonts, signage copy, and the landscaping plans of which the
sign is a part. Ms. Aylaian stated that the signage is intended to be
part of the next landscaping bid package and because the landscaping
plan was not yet approved, the placement of the sign could not
previously be finalized. Ms. Aylaian further stated that the landscaping
directly around the VIC would be completed prior to the opening date.
Ms. Aylaian stated that she intended to have a graphic representation
of the signage for the next meeting.
