Recommendation:
By Minute Motion, approve out-of-state travel for the Economic Development
Manager to attend the National Association of Home Builders in Orlando, Florida
to accept the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD)
award for Falcon Crest Housing Development on Tuesday, February 12, 2008.
Discussion:
The Falcon Crest development has been awarded the HUD's Secretary's Gold Award for
Excellence in Affordable Housing. Attached is the letter from the Department for Housing and
Urban Development notifying the developer of the recognition. Expenses for the travel, hotel
and conference will be under $1,500 and funds are available in Account Number 850-4430-422-
3120.
This is a national award which recognizes innovation and design excellence in public/private
efforts to expand homeownership opportunities to lower -income families. Therefore, staff
recommends the minute motion action.

It is my pleasure to congratulate you on winning the HUD Secretary's Gold Award for
Excellence for Falcon Crest as part of the 241h Annual Best in American Living Award (BALA)
competition. The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), Professional Builder
magazine, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development have sponsored this
prestigious award program for 11 consecutive years.
HUD was very pleased by both the number of entries received and the high quality of
affordable housing designs represented by these projects. A panel of distinguished judges from a
broad range of disciplines and expertise —architects, builders, interior designers, planners, and
federal govermnent officials —reviewed, evaluated, and ranked the entries.
NAHB's annual convention will take place in Orlando, Florida, on February 13-16, 2008.
The awards ceremony will take place at a reception at Sea World on Tuesday, February 12,
2008, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Details on the event will be forwarded at a later date. You
should also expect to hear from Professional Builder magazine's editorial staff, who are
preparing a future article on all of the BALA winners.
