The big music festivals may be gone until next year,
but music lovers can still enjoy live music under the stars
throughout May thanks to the return of Palm Desert’s
Spring Concerts in the Park.
The excitement kicks off at the Civic Center Park
Amphitheater at a new, earlier time, 6:30 p.m., on
Thursday, May 5, with a performance by SantanaWays.
Dubbed “the ultimate Santana tribute band,”
SantanaWays pays homage to the music of Santana by
emphasizing the heart and soul in the Rock & Roll Hall
of Fame band’s extensive musical catalogue. With their
electrifying Latin and blues rock, SantanaWays brings to
life the rhythms and sounds of music that reaches across
decades and generations.
On stage from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. every Thursday in
May, Palm Desert’s Spring Concerts will feature a variety
of talented musical acts designed to please music lovers
of all ages and tastes. Other concert series performances
include high-energy 80s chart-toppers from Flashback
Heart Attack (May 12), and crowd-pleasing country
favorites from the Kelly Rae Band (May 19). The
season will wrap up on May 26 with hard-driving
hits from Legends of Classic Rock, a band comprised
of musicians who’ve played with White Lion, Ratt,
Steppenwolf, Rod Stewart, Alice Cooper, Quiet Riot,
Dokken, and Great White.
The kick off of the free Concerts in the Park series
also means the return of food trucks to Civic Center
Park. Concertgoers are encouraged to sample the
trucks’ culinary creations or bring picnic baskets along
with their blankets or lawn chairs to enjoy the shows.
Alcoholic beverages and smoking are prohibited at
Civic Center Park.
Family YMCA of the Desert will once again be on
hand to lead children’s games and activities before each
of the four shows.

Palm Desert residents are invited to enjoy
a day at the Palm Springs Air Museum free
of charge on Sunday, May 15, as the popular
attraction celebrates Palm Desert Day.
Named by CNN Travel as one of the top
14 aviation museums in the world, the Palm
Springs Air Museum has over 70 flyable
and static aircraft on display inside four
climate-controlled hangars and outside on
the tarmac. Recently, the museum unveiled
the Jim Houston Pavilion featuring the F-117
Nighthawk Stealth Bomber along with exhibits
on stealth technology.
Many of the museum’s docents are veterans
who are willing to share their experiences with
visitors. In addition to the aircraft displays,
the museum uses permanent and temporary
exhibits, related artifacts, artwork, and library
sources to tell the history of the World War II,
Korea, and the Vietnam War eras.
To receive free admission, Palm Desert
residents must show proof of residency in
the form of a California Driver’s License or
California Identification Card. Museum hours
are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
One of the priorities in the City of Palm
Desert’s Strategic Plan is to help ensure
the development of high-quality housing
for people at all income levels. To fulfill
that vision, the City has partnered with
the Coachella Valley Housing Coalition
(CVHC) to help provide a chance at
home ownership for people who might
otherwise never have dreamed of moving
into their own new home.
CVHC, a nonprofit housing coalition,
will develop 14 single-family, detached
homes on lots donated by the City.
The homes will be made available at
an affordable cost to very low- and
low-income first-time homebuyers
through CVHC’s Self-Help program.
Home buyer families form an informal
association and agree to help each
other build their homes with technical
assistance provided by a competent
construction supervisor.
The 14 new Palm Desert homes will be
made available to qualified households
that include a member currently
employed within the jurisdiction of the
City of Palm Desert.
As part of the project, the City has also
set aside $350,000 that will allow the City
to provide up to $25,000 in additional
assistance to qualifying very low- and low-
income first-time homebuyers.
The transfer of City-owned lots to CVHC
is the latest example of the City’s pledge
to help provide housing for all. This
commitment to affordable housing is also
illustrated by the City’s two ownership
opportunity projects as well as the more
than 1,100 City-owned rental housing
units located throughout Palm Desert.
For more information about the new Self-
Help homes and to place your name on
an interest list, please call CVHC at
760-347-3157 or visit www.cvhc.org.

In the event of
a natural disaster or
major emergency, Palm
Desert residents and
businesses may need to be self-sufficient for a
week or more. One of the best ways to accomplish
this is to begin planning and preparing now.
Community Emergency Response Team
(CERT) Training teaches people how to respond
to real life emergencies. Following a pandemic
hiatus, the City of Palm Desert is once again
offering free CERT training to its residents.
Graduates learn how to provide basic medical
aid; fight small fires; safely search for and rescue
victims; and effectively organize community
volunteers.
The next CERT training is scheduled for Friday,
May 13 from 5:30 – 9:30 p.m., and Saturday
and Sunday, May 14 and 15 from 8:00 a.m. –
5:00 p.m. at Monterey Country Club. Successful
completion of the full, 20-hour class earns
graduates a certificate and a CERT kit. Class size is
limited, and early registration is encouraged.
To register for the CERT training please visit
rivcocert.org at tinyurl.com/25nrj7rb. For
more information about CERT training or disaster
preparedness, please email
mornelas@cityofpalmdesert.org or call
760-578-2088 or 760-346-0611, ext. 590.
At its March 10 meeting, the Palm Desert
City Council approved an amended franchise
agreement with Burrtec Waste and Recycling
Services. With the franchise agreement, new
rates went into effect on April 1 for commercial
customers and will go into effect on July 1 for
residential customers.
The agreement incorporates programs required
by California Senate Bill (SB) 1383 which calls for a
75% reduction in organic waste by 2025. SB 1383
requires that food waste be composted rather than
sent to the landfill.
In the upcoming months, residents can
expect to see changes to their bin colors and will
receive a green compost bin if they don’t already
have one, as well as a kitchen pail for collecting
food waste. Residents will also receive
information on how to properly sort materials
into the correct bin.
For more information, please visit
the Organics Recycling project page on
EngagePalmDesert.com.
To help Palm Desert residents and
businesses safely dispose of sensitive

Every 10 years, after receiving an updated U.S. Census count, local
jurisdictions redraw their Council Member district lines to reflect how
populations have changed. Earlier this year, the City
of Palm Desert held a series of workshops and public
hearings to solicit input from residents on how to
reapportion the City’s two districts.
By law, the census redistricting process had to
result in a map with easily identifiable boundaries,
and which created geographically compact,
contiguous districts. The redistricting process also
needed to respect the geographic integrity of local
neighborhoods and preserve communities with
shared common social and economic interests.
Following the review of maps proposed by the City’s
consultant and members of the community, on
March 24 the Palm Desert City Council unanimously
adopted Ordinance Number 1380 adjusting the
boundaries of City Council election districts. For
additional information on the Census Redistricting process and to review the
adopted map, visit MapPalmDesert.org.

As part of a statewide initiative to fight climate change, most Desert
Community Energy (DCE) and Southern California Edison (SCE) customers
were recently transitioned to a Time-of-Use (TOU) rate plan.
With a TOU plan, rates vary according to the time of day, day of the
week (weekday or weekend) and season. Electricity prices are higher
during peak demand hours and lower during off-peak hours. While peak
times may vary by energy provider, they are generally defined as being
between 4 – 9 p.m.
Time-of-Use plans support a cleaner power grid by encouraging customers
to shift some of their electricity use to take advantage of the lower-priced
(off-peak) time periods when energy from renewable resources, like solar and
wind power, are readily available. Customers who can do so may be able to
lower their overall electricity costs.
As a proponent of sustainable environmental policies, the City of Palm
Desert is dedicated to ensuring a secure energy future for its residents.
Here are a few easy ways you can make the most of TOU rates and reduce
energy consumption during peak use hours:
• Program thermostats to pre-cool your home before 4 p.m.• Charge electric vehicles after 9 p.m.• Run appliances in the morning or early afternoon, or after 9 p.m.• Run pool and spa pumps at off peak times• Turn off unessential lighting
