The season’s most scintillating happening – Fashion
Week El Paseo – returns to Palm Desert, March 19 to
26, bringing even more style and sophistication to the
desert’s most fashionable address.
Celebrating 15 years of style in 2022, this week-long
extravaganza and its famous red carpet will once again
illuminate the Gardens on El Paseo with top designers
showcasing their newest collections along with fresh
ideas from emerging talents.
Whether you are a serious stylist or a fledgling
fashionista, Fashion Week El Paseo offers something for
everyone including runway shows, cocktail receptions,
trunk shows, celebrity meet-and-greets, and much more.
This year’s highlights include designer Trina Turk’s
opening-night runway show; local favorite and celebrity
designer Michael Costello unveiling his latest creations;
the debut collections designed by 10 outstanding
recent graduates of the Fashion Institute of Design
and Merchandise; and a runway finale featuring the
romantic, multifaceted creations of Amsterdam–based
designer Edwin Oudshoorn.
Fashion Week is accompanied by the annual Palm
Desert Food & Wine, March 25 to 27. This fun and
festive event attracts foodies, wine lovers, celebrity
chefs and sommeliers for three extraordinary days of
fabulous food and premium wine tasting on El Paseo.
A portion of the proceeds benefit Friends of the James
Beard Foundation.
This year’s list of culinary celebrities features some
of the nation’s top chefs, including Curtis Stone, Carla
Hall, Jamie Gwen, Gail Gand, Zac Young, Fabio Viviani,
Paulette Goto, Afrim Pristine, and more.
Fashion Week El Paseo and Palm Desert Food
& Wine will follow all applicable State and County
health guidelines in place at the time of their events,
including requiring guests to show proof of COVID-
19 vaccination or a negative COVID test within 48
hours prior to entry. For additional information and
a complete list of requirements, please visit each
event’s website.

Grow, an intriguing new dance performance featuring
10 members of the critically acclaimed contemporary
dance company, Backhausdance, and 30 local high school
students, will take place at The Gardens on El Paseo on
Sunday, March 6 at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
The performance captures the unique possibilities
offered by The Gardens on El Paseo to create a dynamic
movement experience. The dance happens in multiple
places, lasts about 30 minutes, and can be viewed from all
sides of the Center Lawn, including the second level. The
audience can expect fluid boundaries between dancers and
visitors—those who come specifically to watch and those
who might discover it unfolding as they come to shop,
dine, or enjoy the outdoor mall.
Grow is the result of this year’s East Valley Dance
Project, an outreach project of the Palm Desert
Choreography Festival at the McCallum Theatre. The
project, now celebrating 15 years, provides students at Desert Mirage and Coachella Valley high
schools with powerful opportunities to experience and explore the art form of dance, develop life
skills, and engage in partnerships with McCallum Theatre Education and Backhausdance.
Performances of Grow are free to the public and promise to captivate young and old.
For additional information, contact McCallum Education Program Manager Joanna Fookes at
jfookes@mccallum-theatre.org or call 760-776-6195.

In the weeks to come, the City of Palm
Desert will expand its means to keep its
residents up to date on what’s happening
in our community. The latest city news
updates, top event listings, photos, videos
and more will be sent to residents and other
interested parties who sign up to receive
emails that are tailored to meet their needs.
While the City has long used email
newsletters as a means to send out
Council Meeting updates and Palm Desert
event listings, the range of topics will
be broadened to include general City
news updates as well as targeted alerts.
An example of one such alert would be
Fireworks Notifications, which may be of
interest to pet owners or other individuals
who may be impacted by loud noises.
Now there’s no reason to miss out on
all the latest e-news from Palm Desert.
To opt in to one or more of these enhanced
email offerings, visit cityofpalmdesert.org/
newsletters newsletter and indicate which
topics you’d like to hear about.
The 2022 Palm Desert Public Art
Documentary Film Series continues on
March 16 with a free screening of
M.C. Escher – Journey to Infinity.
The film tells the story of world-
famous Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher
(1898 – 1972) and is equal parts history,
psychology, and psychedelia. The film
examines Escher’s legacy through his
own words, including excerpts from
lectures and correspondence plus a look
at Escher’s woodcuts, lithographs, and
other print works.
The popular series of free public art-
themed documentary films concludes
on April 20 with Waste Land. Filmed
over nearly three years, the film follows
renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys
to Rio de Janeiro and the world’s largest
garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho,
where he encounters and photographs
an eclectic band of “catadores”—self-
designated pickers of recyclable materials.
The 2022 documentary film series is
presented by the City of Palm Desert
Public Art Department and the University
of California, Riverside Palm Desert
Center. Films screen in the auditorium at
UCR Palm Desert, 75080 Frank Sinatra
Drive, with moderated discussion on the
third Wednesday of the month, February
through April, at 6 p.m. Admission is
free, registration is required, and proof
of vaccination or negative COVID test is
required to attend. Additional protocols
may be required. For more information and
reservations, please call 760-834-0800 or

For decades, the City of Palm
Desert has been a leader in sustainable
environmental policies. With Earth Day
approaching on April 22, we offer the
following tips that may help you find
ways to adapt environmentally friendly
practices in your own daily life.
The City of Palm Desert is hosting
a used oil recycling event on Saturday,
March 5, from 9 a.m. to noon that gives
Palm Desert residents a convenient way
to safely dispose of their used oil and
oil filters. The event will take place at
AutoZone, located at 73605 Highway
111. Workers at the event will accept
up to five gallons of used oil per vehicle.
Participants who turn in a used oil filter
will receive a free one of equal or lesser
value (limit two per household). All
participants will receive a free shop rag
and funnel while supplies last.
Have old computers, televisions, or cell
phones lying around? You can easily and
conveniently donate your old and broken
electronics to Desert Arc for recycling. Just
call 760-404-1370 for more information.
Another helpful way to support
sustainability is to learn more about
the City’s efforts to meet the State of
California’s SB 1383 organics recycling
mandate. For more on this timely topic,
visit engagepalmdesert.com/organics-
recycling.
On a related note, composting is a
great way to love the earth since many
of your food scraps can go straight into a
compost bin. Learn more by attending a
free, virtual composting workshop online
at rcwaste.org/classes.
The City of Palm Desert will wrap
up its Earth Day-related events with
the annual Neighborhood Clean-Up on
Saturday, April 16. For more information
about the Clean-Up and how you can
participate, please see the enclosed flyer
or call Burrtec Waste & Recycling Services
at 760-340-2113.
To learn more about recycling, “what
goes where,” and what you can do to
protect our environment, please visit

One of the many things that make Palm Desert a uniquely wonderful place
is its involved citizenry, who give generously of their time and talents to serve
our community. More than 100 volunteers serve on Palm Desert’s standing
committees, commissions, and boards, and the City is currently seeking
applications from citizens who wish to join them.
Covering subject matter ranging from marketing and finance to cultural
resources and parks, the City’s advisory boards develop recommendations that
are reflective of the community and provide councilmembers and staff with
perspectives to make decisions that will enrich Palm Desert.
The complete list of City boards and links to their individual webpages can
be found at cityofpalmdesert.org/our-city/committees-and-commissions.
With few exceptions, advisory board members must reside in Palm Desert.
Certain advisory boards may also require specific experience in a technical
field or have other qualifying criteria.
Residents who meet the eligibility requirements are encouraged to apply
for positions which interest them. Applications are welcome year-round,
with interviews and appointments occurring annually in May or June. To
get started, complete the electronic application found at cityofpalmdesert.
primegov.com/public/committees and submit it along with two references.
If you have questions regarding advisory boards, please contact the Palm
Desert City Clerk’s Office at 760-776-6487 or cityclerk@cityofpalmdesert.org.

MARCH/APRIL
2022
Celebrating its 15th year of promoting recreation and the
beautiful outdoors, the Coachella Valley Wildflower Festival
returns to Palm Desert’s Civic Center Park on Saturday,
March 5, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Presented by Friends of the Desert Mountains, the festival
features great wildflower displays and educational exhibits
plus vendors and local artisans selling their wares. There will
be an interactive Kids’ Zone including a climbing wall, a
Safety Fair, and much more. A variety of food and beverages
will be available for purchase, and adults can enjoy a beer
and wine garden. Live music performances will add just the
right note to the event, as well.
In addition to the in-person event on March 5, Friends of
Desert Mountains plans to offer fun virtual options as well,
including their popular 30x30x30 challenge and Wildflower
Wednesday livestreams continuing throughout March.
The Coachella Valley Wildflower Festival is free to the
public, but with its raffles and silent auction items, the event
raises funds to help support the Friends’ work in protecting
and preserving the area’s land resources.
Civic Center Park is located at 43900 San Pablo Avenue,
Palm Desert. For more information about the Wildflower
Festival, visit desertmountains.org or call 760-568-9918.
