STREET Kicks Off Palm Desert FIRST WEEKEND
Palm Desert First Weekend kicks off with attitude this November with the return of STREET – a free, all ages celebration of music,
art, fashion and food inspired by street culture taking place Friday, November 1, from 5 to 11 p.m. under the stars at the third level
parking deck (near Macy’s) at Westfield Palm Desert.
Focused around energetic art and music with an urban flare, STREET will feature live painting, interactive art, pop-art inspired
sculpture, and 50 massive murals created by artists across the globe as well as six hours of fresh local and regional sounds from
Southern California bands and DJs.
CV Food Truck Park, La Quinta Brewing Company, and Stuft Pizza will provide mouthwatering treats in an outdoor setting that
offers some of the Valley’s most breathtaking views. New this year, a Bright VIP Lounge will offer premium stage views, complimentary
food and drinks, and upscale furnishings.
First Weekend continues in December with a party to Celebrate the Season at The Gardens on
El Paseo featuring “A Rockin’ Holiday Tribute to the King!” starring Scot Bruce as Elvis Presley.
On Friday, December 6, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., the center court at The Gardens will echo
with the sounds of some of Elvis’ greatest hits and holiday favorites. Free pictures with Santa Claus,
refreshments, and falling snow will add to the festive spirit.
These events are only the start of the First Weekend season. Taking place in Palm Desert every
first weekend of the month, November through May, the public is invited to discover a celebration
of arts and entertainment.
For more information about all of the exciting First Weekend events, please visit pdfirstweekend.com.

Palm Desert HONORS VETERANS at CIVIC CENTER PARK
Did you know the City has a program dedicated to helping homeless
people in Palm Desert?
The City, in partnership with the County of Riverside, recently established
a new team of professionals who provide an array of services to those looking
to overcome homelessness. Available services include referrals related to
mental health, substance use, medical needs, housing assistance, and more.
These types of programs have had great success in combatting
homelessness, but the process can be challenging, requiring
multiple interactions over long periods of time.
You can help. Residents, businesses, and visitors are the “eyes and
ears” of our community. If you see someone who appears to need services,
please contact the City so that we can connect them with our homelessness
professionals. By simply providing a brief description and location, you could
help someone find shelter and a home (always dial 9-1-1 in an emergency).
You can use the City’s mobile app, Palm Desert In Touch, available via
smartphone, tablet, or computer – www.cityofpalmdesert.org/in-touch
– call 760-776-6361, or email homelesshelp@cityofpalmdesert.org.
The Palm Desert Community Gallery will
highlight batik artwork from Darleen Wilkerson in
its new exhibition — Art from the Heart: Local Scenes
in Technicolor — on display November 22 through
January 30. A public reception will honor the artist
on Monday, December 2, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Wilkerson has been working in the medium of
fiber art since the early 1970s. For more than 33
years, she worked on projects in the Middle East and
developing areas around the world to help women
adapt their traditional embroidery skills to modern
products to promote economic empowerment.
Many of these projects were funded by the United
Nations and the U.S. State Department.
Most of Wilkerson’s fine art batiks represent
realistic scenes of exotic local architecture. This is
rare, according to the artist, as the medium is often
used to create abstract designs. The gallery exhibition
includes scenes from around the Coachella Valley.
The Community Gallery is located in City Hall,
73510 Fred Waring Drive, and is open Monday
through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more
information, please call 760-346-0611, ext. 664,
or visit www.palmdesertart.org.

Palm Desert residents can safely dispose of
their used oil and oil filters in a convenient and
environmentally friendly way and get a free shop
towel, funnel, filter bag, and drainer container at
the City’s Used Oil and Oil Filter Exchange Event
on Saturday, November 2, from 9 a.m. to noon.
Located at the Auto Zone at 73605 Highway
111, the event will also give participants who
bring in a used oil filter a new one for free.
Used oil must be stored properly in a clean,
sealed, uncontaminated container. Workers at
the event will accept up to five gallons of used
oil per vehicle. It is illegal to transport more than
five gallons of used oil in a personal vehicle.
Anyone who is unable to participate in this event
can dispose of their used oil and oil filters free of
charge at Burrtec’s Recycle Center and at other
certified collection centers in Palm Desert. Free
filters, two per person, are only available at the
November 2 event while supplies last. For more
information, please call 760-776-6454.
One of the many things that make Palm Desert a uniquely wonderful place is its involved citizenry, who
give generously of their time and talents to serve our community.
More than 100 resident volunteers serve on the City’s 17 standing committees and commissions or
represent the community through appointments to ad hoc committees and other organizations including
the Palm Springs Airport Commission, Coachella Valley Mosquito & Vector Control District, and Joslyn
Center. Many more residents serve in a volunteer capacity as
Palm Desert Library or Public Art Program docents or with Palm
Desert’s award-winning Citizens on Patrol (COPS) team.
The Palm Desert City Council, along with City staff, deeply
appreciate and gratefully recognize the service of Palm Desert’s
volunteers who selflessly dedicate themselves to community
service and to making Palm Desert a community of which we can
all be exceptionally proud.

The desert’s largest celebration of dance marks its 22nd year this November
as The Palm Desert Choreography Festival returns to the McCallum Theatre stage.
This one of a kind festival, taking place Saturday, November 9, at 7 p.m.
and Sunday, November 10, at 4 p.m. highlights dance as an art form while
creating a venue for emerging and established choreographers and developing
new dance audiences.
Finalists were selected from submissions from across the country with
choreographers competing for thousands of dollars in awards.
The 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to celebrated hip-hop
choreographer, dancer, and artistic director Rennie Harris as part of the Saturday
evening show, which features performances by professional dance companies.
Sunday’s competition will include performances by pre-professional
companies as well as local dancers from the Festival’s outreach projects. These
projects, East Valley Dance and The Studio projects, give students a chance to
work with a professional choreographer, learn an original piece of choreography,
and perform on the McCallum Theatre stage.
Festival tickets, starting at $15, are available
by calling 760-340-ARTS (2787), online
at www.mccallumtheatre.com, or at the
McCallum Theatre Box Office.
