The Independence Day fun starts at 7:30 p.m. with a presentation of our nation’s flag followed by a concert featuring the Swing Cats Big Band performing a variety of classic American pop and swing favorites. The sky will light up at 9 p.m. with a spectacular 20-minute-long fireworks display synchronized to patriotic-themed songs simulcast on radio stations The Mix 100.5 FM and 98.5 The Bull. While most of the festivities are scheduled for evening, Civic Center Park is open all day for family fun. Activities and games for children will be available starting at 4 p.m. on the field area behind the Family YMCA of the Desert, a short distance north of the two children’s playgrounds. Revelers will once again have an opportunity to buy taste-tempting treats from a variety of food trucks and vendors beginning at 5 p.m. Attendees are also encouraged to bring picnic dinners, blankets, and chairs to enjoy the show. Alcoholic beverages, smoking, and portable barbeques are prohibited. To protect public safety during the holiday celebration in the busy park, golf carts will not be allowed to operate inside park grounds on July 4. Private fireworks are illegal in Civic Center Park and throughout Palm Desert. Civic Center Park is located at 73510 Fred Waring Drive. Parking at Civic Center Park on July 4 is accessible from Fred Waring Drive only and will be allowed until the parking lots are full. For the comfort and convenience of attendees, free, air-conditioned shuttle service will be provided between The Gardens on El Paseo and the park from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. The Gardens is located at the corner of El Paseo and San Pablo Avenue. To accommodate the pyrotechnic safety zone, San Pablo Avenue between Fred Waring and Magnesia Falls Drive plus the northwest corner of Civic Center Park (including the dog parks and baseball fields) will close at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 2. Fred Waring between San Pablo and Portola Avenue will close in both directions on July 4 at 7 p.m. Streets will reopen when it is safe to do so following the conclusion of the event. The tenth annual 9 Cities Blood Drive Challenge returns this July with Coachella Valley communities competing head- to-head to inspire the most lifesaving donations. This year’s drive takes place on Saturday, July 23, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Palm Desert Community Center. What started as a friendly competition between valley cities is now an essential event that is depended upon to bolster depleted blood supplies over the summer months. Your generosity could save a life while helping Palm Desert reclaim bragging rights to the 9 Cities Challenge title. Donors at mobile collection centers will receive, while supplies last, a special edition 9 Cities Blood Drive t-shirt. Donors must be at least 15 years of age – donors under 17 require proof of their date of birth and a signed parental consent form (available at the drive) – weigh at least 115 pounds, and feel well on drive day. A photo ID is also required. Donors should maintain their regular meal schedules and increase fluid intake (water is best) in the 24 hours prior to donating. Donors who are unable to attend the drive are encouraged to donate in Palm Desert’s name anytime between July 1 and August 31 at LifeStream’s Rancho Mirage or La Quinta centers. They should request that their donations be counted toward Palm Desert’s 9 Cities Challenge total. The Palm Desert Community Center is located at 43900 San Pablo Avenue adjacent to Civic Center Park. Personal fireworks are illegal in Palm Desert and most Coachella Valley communities. Fireworks are not toys. Fireworks and sparklers are designed to explode or throw off showers of hot sparks and they burn at temperatures exceeding 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, hotter than a blowtorch. More fires are reported on Independence Day in the United States than on any other day of the year and fireworks account for nearly half of those fires. The Riverside County Fire Department provides a website with fire safety and emergency incident information as well as the dates and locations of public fireworks displays at www.rvcfire.org. For more information, please call 951-940-6985. The celebration of our nation’s independence is a joyful occasion, but the loud noises associated with fireworks and other festivities on July 4 can be confusing and frightening to pets, and disturbing to some individuals with noise sensitivity. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) advises pet owners to keep their dogs and cats at home in a quiet, sheltered, and escape-proof area during fireworks displays. Residents who live in affected areas should follow the SPCA’s advice and protect their pets. Pet owners are encouraged to bring their pets indoors during the 20-minute fireworks display at Civic Center Park scheduled to start at 9 p.m. on Monday, July 4. Fireworks displays are common in the Coachella Valley year-round, not just on Independence Day. The City of Palm Desert shares fireworks alerts via email notifications and social media posts for displays that are scheduled in and near our city. To receive email alerts in your inbox, sign up at www.cityofpalmdesert.org/our-city/newsletters. DON’T GET BURNED BY FIREWORKS ON JULY 4 PROTECT YOUR PETS ON JULY 4 BEAT EXTREME HEAT AT A COOL CENTER Although it is 100% preventable, drowning is the leading cause of accidental injury-related death for children ages 1 to 4 in Riverside County. Nearly 90% of all drownings and near-drownings occur in backyard pools or spas. A drowning child can lose consciousness in less than 30 seconds and suffer irreversible brain damage after just four minutes. To reduce the threat of drowning, remember the ABCs of water safety: A = Adult Supervision Assign an adult to keep their eyes on children in the water at all times. B = Barriers Ensure that pools are protected by fences, self-closing and self-latching gates, motion sensors, and window and door alarms. C = Classes Parents and caregivers should take CPR and First Aid. Swimming courses are recommended for children and adults. Swim courses for children of all ages are available throughout the summer at the Palm Desert Aquatic Center. For more information, please visit www.rvcfire.org. The application area is located within the boundaries of Highway 111, Portola Avenue, Indian Hills Way, and the Santa Rosa Mountains. Applications will take place on Saturdays from 2 a.m. – 7 a.m., weather permitting. Because the area is densely populated and has many gated communities with restricted access, these applications will be carried out by helicopter for the most efficient and effective treatment. The Vector Control District wants to reduce the number of invasive mosquitoes that can transmit serious viruses, including dengue and Zika. Aedes mosquitoes have a painful bite that diminishes residents’ quality of life due to incessant daytime biting. When mosquitoes are eliminated before becoming adults, they cannot pose a nuisance or disease problem. The product being used in the treatments, VectoBac® WDG, is environmentally friendly, approved for application on organic crops, and registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Department of Pesticide Regulation. The active ingredient in this product is Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti), a microbe found naturally in soil. Bti makes proteins that are toxic to mosquito larvae found in standing water, preventing them from developing into flying adult mosquitoes. Bti has no effect on people, pets, plants, or wildlife at the amounts used for mosquito control. In fact, little to no direct toxicity to non-target insects has been observed with this product. Residents may choose to stay indoors during and for 30 minutes following the application as a best practice to reduce exposure.
