The festival is unique in its mission to highlight dance as an art form and to provide a space for dancemakers to share their creative works with the public. Twenty-five talented choreographers from across the nation have been selected to present their work in two distinctive performances over the weekend. These choreographers, chosen from submissions across the country and abroad, will compete in a choreography competition split into two divisions, offering dance enthusiasts a chance to witness a diverse range of styles and performances. Beyond the performances, the festival offers educational opportunities, such as workshops and residencies, to inspire and support the next generation of choreographers and dancers. The event also celebrates those who have made significant contributions to the world of dance, ensuring that this art form continues to grow and thrive. The festival kicks off on November 9, when professional dancers take the stage to perform choreographed pieces for the audience and a panel of expert judges, who will present awards at the end of the night. The highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to the celebrated choreographic duo, Nappytabs (Tabitha and Napoleon D’umo). With an impressive body of work spanning from So You Think You Can Dance to the Oscars and Superbowl Halftime shows, Nappytabs has left an indelible mark on the world of dance. On November 10, the festival shifts its focus to emerging choreographers and dancers from colleges, studios, and local dance companies. These talented performers will also compete for a range of awards. Additionally, students from the East Valley Dance Project will showcase original choreography in a special exhibition, adding a local touch to the weekend’s performances. Tickets for the Palm Desert Choreography Festival start at $28 and can be purchased by calling 760-340-ARTS (2787), visiting mccallumtheatre.com, or stopping by the McCallum Theatre Box Office.
