This vibrant event celebrates the timeless art of plein-air painting, showcasing the Coachella Valley’s stunning landscapes and rich artistic heritage. Plein-air painting—capturing outdoor scenes directly from nature—has a storied history in the Coachella Valley. This art form began in the 1870s when the Southern Pacific Railroad provided free rides to artists in exchange for artwork promoting travel to the West. These advertisements introduced the world to the desert’s unique beauty, inspiring generations of artists. Some of the most renowned artists of the era passed through the region, drawn by colorful skies, majestic mountains, and beautiful rock formations. While many continued to the burgeoning art colonies along the California coast, others stayed, leaving a lasting legacy on the desert’s art scene. Today, plein-air painting thrives, attracting contemporary artists eager to capture the Valley’s unparalleled beauty. The California Desert Plein Air Festival is the only event of its kind in the Coachella Valley, dedicated entirely to plein-air painting. Over three weeks, the festival offers a dynamic program of activities. Artists will venture to iconic locations like Civic Center Park, El Paseo, and other scenic spots across Palm Desert, where they will choose their vantage points, paint on-site, and submit their completed works for exhibition and judging. Visitors can also attend workshops and demonstrations to learn from talented artists as they share techniques and insights into plein-air painting. Artist talks provide a deeper appreciation for the art form through engaging discussions with participating painters. The festival culminates in a showcase of plein-air and studio paintings, offering visitors the chance to admire and purchase unique works while meeting the artists behind them. The festival’s Awards Program will honor exceptional works with cash prizes in multiple categories, including Best in Show and first, second, and third places. Judges will evaluate the entries, with winners announced during a public reception at the Artists Center on January 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. All works from the festival will remain on display at the Artists Center at the Galen through February 2, allowing art lovers to enjoy the collection in a gallery setting. Whether you’re an art enthusiast or simply curious about plein-air painting, this festival offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature, meet talented artists, and celebrate the Coachella Valley’s extraordinary beauty. Join us at the Artists Center at the Galen, 72567 Highway 111, for this inspiring event. For more information, visit CaliforniaDesertPleinAir.com. Step into mid-century charm with the Historical Society of Palm Desert’s latest attraction: a stunning Breeze Block Garden. Located in front of the Historical Society Museum at 72861 El Paseo, just west of Highway 74, this outdoor exhibit is a tribute to a design icon that defined an era. Curated by HSPD Board President David Toltzmann, the garden showcases these architectural gems, popularized by Edward Durrell Stone. Breeze Blocks, beloved from the 1950s through the mid-1960s, combine style and function—encouraging airflow while shielding against the desert sun. They were even featured at the 1964 New York World’s Fair! Whether you’re a Modernism Week enthusiast or a fan of Palm Desert’s rich architectural history, this exhibit is a must-see. Pair your visit to the garden with a tour inside the museum, where you’ll find fascinating displays on the City’s past and its star-studded legacy. The Palm Desert Historical Society Museum is open Friday through Monday, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. from October through May, and is FREE to the public, thanks to sponsorship from the City of Palm Desert and the support of HSPD members. Plan your visit during Modernism Week for an immersive experience of the Palm Desert design, culture, and history. For more information, visit hspd.org, call 760-346-6588, or email info@hspd.org. This moving and inspiring performance is part of the McCallum’s Aesthetic Education Program and offers a unique blend of music, literature, and history. Based on her best-selling book, Golabek shares the true story of her mother, Lisa Jura, a young Jewish musician in 1938 Vienna. Lisa’s dream of debuting at the renowned Musikverein concert hall is disrupted by the Nazi regime. Forced to flee, she finds refuge on Willesden Lane in London, where her love for music becomes her lifeline and a source of hope. Through masterful storytelling and performances of world-famous piano compositions, Golabek takes the audience on a poignant journey that celebrates resilience and the transformative power of music. Perfect for all ages, this 75-minute, no-intermission event combines entertainment with education. Tickets are just $15 (inclusive of fees), making it an accessible opportunity for families to engage with history and culture together. Adding to the experience, youth ticket holders will receive a complimentary copy of the Young Readers Edition of The Children of Willesden Lane by Mona Golabek and Lee Cohen. Tailored for ages 9 through 14, this book provides a meaningful way for families to explore the story’s historical context. Copies can be picked up in advance at the McCallum Theatre box office, encouraging a community-wide “Willesden Read” ahead of the performance. This unique event is not just a show, it’s an opportunity to reflect, learn, and connect through art. For tickets and more information, visit McCallumTheatre.org.
