Attendees are also encouraged to bring picnic dinners, blankets, and chairs to enjoy the show. Alcoholic beverages, smoking, and portable barbeques are prohibited. Enjoy a day filled with swimming, water play, and other activities topped off with a great view of the fireworks at the City's Independence Day Celebration in neighboring Civic Center Park. On Thursday, July 4, recreation swim at the Aquatic Center's three pools starts at 11 a.m. and continues through the conclusion of the fireworks at 9 p.m. Diving boards and slides will close at dusk. Admission for Palm Desert residents is $4 for adults (ages 13 - 59), $3 for seniors and youth (ages 6 —12 or 60 and up), and $2.50 for children (ages 2 — 5). Children under 2-years-old are free. Admission fees for non-residents are slightly higher. The Aquatic Center's concession stand will be selling food and drinks in keeping with the holiday. Thousands of people attend Palm Desert's Independence Day Celebration each year and parking can be a challenge, especially in the late afternoon when streets around the Aquatic Center and Civic Center Park begin to close. Aquatic Center visitors are encouraged to arrive early and plan for parking. Alternative options include Magnesia Falls Drive east of Portola Avenue as well as the parking lot for Magnesia Falls Park. The Aquatic Center is located at 73751 Magnesia Falls Drive. For more information, please call 760-565-7467. Fireworks lovers across our great nation look forward each year to July 4. If you enjoy the eye popping colors and ground shaking bangs of Independence Day fireworks, make sure you plan to do so at an authorized display. Personal fireworks are illegal in Palm Desert and most Coachella Valley communities. Palm Desert's firefighters encourage everyone who enjoys a good fireworks display to attend an organized public fireworks show such as the City's Independence Day Celebration at Palm Desert Civic Center Park on Thursday, July 4. Fireworks are not toys. Fireworks and sparklers are designed to explode or throw off showers of hot sparks and they burn at temperatures exceeding 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, hotter than a blow torch. More fires are reported on Independence Day in the United States than on any other day of the year and fireworks account for nearly half of those fires. The Riverside County Fire Department provides a website with fire safety and emergency incident information as well as the dates and locations of public fireworks displays at www.rvcfire.org. For more information, please call 951-940-6985. The celebration of our nation's independence is a joyful occasion, but the loud noises associated with fireworks and other festivities on July 4 can be confusing and frightening to pets. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ` (SPCA) advises pet owners to keep their dogs and cats at home in a quiet, sheltered, and escape -proof area during fireworks displays. The City of Palm Desert encourages residents who live in affected `• areas to follow the SPCA's advice and protect their pets. Pet owners are encouraged to bring their pets indoors during the 20-minute fireworks display at Civic Center Park scheduled to start at 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 4. For more information about the City's Independence Day ` Celebration, please call 760-346-0611, ext. 425. COMMUNITY GALLERY FEATURES ed'a (VM4a&,T - ewcpf 6 (54 The Palm Desert Community Gallery will highlight artwork from Hiroko Momii in its new exhibition - Color Vibration - Concept of Self - on display July 5 through September 6. A public reception will honor the artist on Monday, July 8, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Born in Japan, Momii moved to the United States in 1979. In 1980, she hired on as an apprentice at a silk screen art studio and realized that she wanted to become an artist when she first pulled a squeegee across a silk screen. Momii entered the MFA program in painting and drawing at California State University, Long Beach in 1994, graduating with a Master's degree in 1998. During her studies in the program, she found the way to express her inner experiences and visions through abstract painting. Momii is influenced by Wassily Kandinsky's statement, "Spirituality is the purpose of art," and says that for her, making art has become a life process, with the act of painting serving as meditation. Momii has exhibited her artwork in both solo and group shows at galleries in Santa Fe, Los Angeles, the Morongo Basin, and Japan. The Palm Desert Community Gallery is located in Palm Desert City Hall and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, please call 760-346-0611, ext. 664 or visit www.palmdesertart.org. SAVE A LIFE AND SUPPORT YOUR COMMUNITY The seventh annual Nine Cities Blood Drive Challenge returns this July with Coachella Valley communities competing head -to -head to inspire the most lifesaving donations. Palm Desert's drive takes place on Saturday, July 13, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Palm Desert Community Center donors will receive a ticket for a free movie and a commenorative cap. Summer is the most challenging time for blood donations and your generosity could save a life while helping Palm Desert reclaim the total donations title that our community won five years ago. Donors must be at least 15 years of age - donors under 17 require proof of their date of birth and a signed parental consent form (available at the drive) - weigh at least 110 pounds, and feel well on drive day. A photo ID is also required. Donors should maintain their regular meal schedules and increase fluid intake (water is best) in the 24 hours prior to donating. The Palm Desert Community Center is located at 43900 San Pablo Avenue adjacent to Civic Center Park. For more information and to make an appointment, please call LifeStream at 800-879-4484 or visit LStream.org. Although it is 100% preventable, drowning is the leading cause of accidental injury -related death for children ages 1 to 4 in Riverside County. Nearly 90% of all drownings and near-drownings occur in backyard pools or spas. A drowning child can lose consciousness in less than 30 seconds and suffer irreversible brain damage after just four minutes. To reduce the threat of drowning, remember the ABCs of water safety: A - Adult Supervision Assign an adult to keep their eyes on children in the water at all times. B - Barriers Ensure that pools are protected by fences, self -closing and self - latching gates, motion sensors, and window and door alarms. C - Classes Parents and caregivers should take CPR and First Aid. Swimming courses are recommended for children and adults. For more information, please visit www.rvcfire.org. STATE ROUTE 60 WIDENING PROJECT STARTING SOON Motorists in Palm Desert are generally fortunate when it comes to avoiding traffic delays, but commuters and others traveling west on State Route 60 toward Riverside, Los Angeles, and Southern California beaches might not be so lucky beginning this summer. Work is starting on a new $135 million project to widen a 4.5 mile section of the heavily traveled east -west highway through "the badlands" between Beaumont and Moreno Valley. Beginning in late July and continuing through the end of the year, one westbound lane on the 60 freeway will be closed so that workers can begin the widening. The project is designed to improve safety and reduce congestion with new lanes scheduled to open in late 2021. Additional project features include: widened shoulders; new wildlife crossings/ fencing; and flattened roadway curves that will improve motorist site distance. Interstate 10 is recommended as an alternative route during construction. For more information, please visit rctc.org/60trucklanes. A helpline is also available by calling 866-413-6060. While putting the wrong item in a recycling bin might seem insignificant, it makes a big difference locally and globally as thousands of tons of recyclables are being prevented from being reused. Think of "one bad apple spoiling the bunch." The same now holds true for recycling thanks to new guidelines being enforced by China, a major importer of recyclables from the United States. You can do your part to help the environment and ease the global crisis by learning what is recyclable, what is not, and taking care to keep them separated. The City has provided a convenient new tool — RecycleCoach — to help you navigate the ever changing and sometimes confusing world of recycling. RecycleCoach is an app that can be accessed from your mobile device or home computer. The app has all the information you need to become an expert recycler and avoid common mistakes. To access the app, visit recyclecoach.com or download RecycleCoach from your mobile device's app store. Help solve a global issue by changing the way you recycle at home and remember the following motto — "When in doubt, throw it out."
