Now that the drought restrictions have been lifted, some people have started watering their lawns and are enjoying green grass again. Others, knowing that water is an ongoing issue in the desert, have converted their turf to water wise, drought tolerant landscaping and taken advantage of programs, such as the Coachella Valley Water District's landscape rebates, that make the change more affordable. Residents must decide which choice works better for their household. r A treasured local tradition and one of the desert's most fun and colorful events returns at 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 27, when scores of decorated carts, floats, and marching bands will head down world famous El Paseo for the 55th annual Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade. i The City's role is to ensure that Palm Desert remains an attractive place. This means that while our Municipal Code does not require residents to water their lawns or landscaping, it does require that yards be properly maintained. Palm Desert's residents and businesses do a terrific job of making our community a great place to live, work, play, and visit. Help us continue that great work by keeping our community beautiful and ensuring that yards in our city are attractive and appropriately cared for. For more information, please call the City's Code Compliance Hotline at 760-776-6360. Organized by the Palm Desert Area Chamber of Commerce, the Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade is the largest parade of its kind and a popular favorite that attracts people from across the desert and around the world. The day's fun begins at 9 a.m. when the Palm Desert Rotary will hold its popular annual Pancake Breakfast on the corner of El Paseo and San Luis Rey. Other attractions include a Kid's Play Zone, food and drink vendors, awards and Nd trophy presentations, and more. Free seating can be found at multiple locations along the parade route. VIP seats ($25 each) and Auen Foundation's free Senior Seating both include a boxed lunch per seat and can be reserved in advance beginning September 1. For more information and to reserve seats, please call the parade hotline at 760-346-6111. CITY OFFERS FREE E-WASTE DISPOSAL The City will hold a free electronic waste collection event on Saturday, September 21, from 7 to 11 a.m. in the parking lot at Palm Desert Civic Center, 73510 Fred Waring Drive. IITY GALLERYXH auV[ The Palm Desert Community Gallery will highlight artwork from photographer Robert Bergazyn in its new exhibition, The Coachella Valley Desert, on display through November 15. The public is invited to a reception with the artist on Monday, September 23, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Bergazyn got his start in Philadelphia in the 1970s working with black and white film and following the techniques pioneered by famed photographer Ansel Adams. He taught photography classes in Philadelphia and Des Moines and has had his work displayed in a variety of private collections as well as galleries and museums including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Art House Gallery in Des Moines, and The Contemporary Art Workshop in Chicago. The sixth annual Y Be Fit Palm Desert Challenge returns to Civic Center Park on Sunday, October 6, giving walkers, runners, and tri- athletes of all ages and skill levels a chance to get fit and join in the fun. Sponsored by the City of Palm Desert, the event benefits Family YMCA of the Desert, and includes something for everyone including a Reverse Mini - Triathlon, a 5K Run/Walk, a Color Run, and a Health and Wellness Fair featuring booths, activities, and music from 7 to 11 a.m. The Reverse Mini -Triathlon starts with a 5K run, followed immediately by a 10-mile bike IBITION SH15 )aA5 Today Bergazyn's photographs employ color and modern tools such as digital photography and Photoshop. His current exhibition explores the relationships between objects, patterns, and the play of light and shadow, as well as color and texture with a focus on the "sparse magnificence" of the Coachella Valley desert working to communicate the desert's three-dimensional grandeur in a two-dimensional photograph. The Palm Desert Community Gallery is located in Palm Desert City Hall and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, please call 760-346-0611, ext. 664 or visit www.palmdesertart.org. ride, and concludes with a refreshing 300 meter swim at the Palm Desert Aquatic Center. This year's event once again includes a team category where runners, cyclists, and swimmers can form a team of up to three members and compete together, with each team member participating only in his or her chosen specialty. Members' times will be combined to see which team was the fastest. . A 5K Run/Walk and a 2K Color Run offer additional options for athletes, families, and friends as well as those who just want to mix in a little activity with their fun. Art lovers from across the Coachella Valley are encouraged to volunteer as docents for the City of Palm Desert, giving walking tours of the City's celebrated public art collection. Docent led tours feature the sculptures of the El Paseo Sculpture Exhibition as well as public artworks in Civic Center Park and at the Palm Desert Public Library. Regularly scheduled tours are held monthly on selected Saturdays from September through May. Docents also are needed for private tours scheduled upon request any day of the week. This opportunity is not limited to Palm Desert residents. Prior experience or study in the arts is preferred. Accepted volunteers will receive training. Once training has been completed, volunteers commit, on average, up to three hours a month. Applications are due no later than Friday, September 20, at 5 p.m. Interviews will be held the first week of October. If you are interested in receiving a docent application or for more information, please email alawrence@ cityofpalmdesert.org or call 760-837-1664. N OCT09ER 6, 2019 Following the triathlon's conclusion, Y Be Fit will continue with a free Health and Wellness Fair that offers members of the public a wide array of valuable information along with vendor booths, entertainment, and activities for all ages. Palm Desert's daily operations are paid for from the General Fund. This year's General Fund budget represents a roughly 4.6% increase from the prior year with just over $60.7 million in revenues and a little less in expenditures resulting in a balanced budget with a slight surplus. The rise in expenditures is primarily the result of increases in public safety costs, personnel costs, and the statewide minimum wage. Increases in projected revenues include increases to transient occupancy tax (TOT) and sales tax revenues. The lion's share of expenditures, $37 million or just over 49% of the City's $75 million in operational expenses (combined ECRWSS Resident and/or Business Palm Desert, CA Balanced and Budgeting General Fund and Fire Fund), continues to be dedicated to providing public safety services including police and fire. The City's major revenue sources continue to be sales tax and hotel tax (TOT) with property tax coming in a distant third. Palm Desert's new budget will continue to fund a wide array of improvements and services including projects that create opportunities for business growth, jobs, and affordable housing. Palm Desert also continues to partner with OpenGov to enhance transparency and understanding of the City's budget and finances. OpenGov's online interactive charts and graphs dynamically illustrate where revenues come from and where the money is spent, providing residents and other stakeholders with an intuitive, easy to use window into how their government works.
