The 2019 Palm Desert Public Art Documentary Film Series continues on March 21 with a
free screening of AS IS by Nick Cave.
In 2015, visual artist Nick Cave traveled to Shreveport,
Louisiana to begin an eight month art project leading up to a one-
time multimedia performance using hundreds of people from the
local community. This behind the scenes documentary shows how
one man brought people from all walks of life together using the
power of art. A discussion of the film will follow the screening.
The popular series of free public art-themed documentary
films concludes on April 25 with Herb & Dorothy 50 x 50.
In 2008, legendary art collectors Herb and Dorothy Vogel made an announcement
that stunned the art world. The retired postal worker (Herb) and librarian (Dorothy),
who built a world -class art collection on their humble salaries, gave that collection
to the public. Developed as the follow-up film to Megumi Sasaki's award -winning
2008 documentary Herb & Dorothy, Herb & Dorothy SOX 50
captures the last chapter of the Vogel's extraordinary life,
raising various questions on art, and what it takes to
support art in today's society.
The documentary film series is presented by the City
of Palm Desert Public Art Department and the University
of California, Riverside Palm Desert Graduate Center.
Films screen at 6 p.m. in the auditorium at UCR Palm
Desert, 75080 Frank Sinatra Drive. Admission is free, but
reservations are recommended. For more information,
or to RSVP, please call UCR Palm Desert at 760-834-0800 or register online at
palmdesert.ucr.edu/public-art-documentary-series.
Open Call 2019 will feature over 100 aspiring local artists, ages 11 to 92,
bringing incredible talent, heart, and soul to the McCallum Theatre stage on
April 18, 19, and 20.
Celebrating its 21 st year in 2019, the popular talent competition for
all ages is a McCallum audience favorite. Presented by McCallum Theatre
Education, the talent competition teams local artists with staff and crew to
present four visually stunning, energetic performances that are fun for the
entire family.
Audience members vote for their favorite acts at the Thursday and Friday
evening and Saturday matinee performances. Winners will be announced at
Saturday evening's final performance and receive prizes ranging from $500
for talent achievement to a $2,500 grand prize.
Tickets start at only $12 and performances sell out each year. To get your
tickets, contact the McCallum Theatre box office, 73000 Fred Waring Drive.
Tickets can also be purchased online at www.mccallumtheatre.com or by
calling 760-340-2787.
Do you have a few hours each week that you could share
with your community to enhance the beauty, safety, and
quality of life in Palm Desert?
Volunteering with Palm Desert Citizens On Patrol
(COPS) can be a rewarding experience, especially since
you can volunteer on a schedule that works for you.
Palm Desert's COPS volunteers receive specialized
training including CPR/First Aid, traffic control, driver's
safety, and patrolling requirements. They work closely with
police and firefighters, monitoring police radio traffic,
and responding to accident scenes where they assist with
traffic control.
COPS volunteers also run the
City's Vacation Home Check
Program, which provides Palm
D ' Desert residents with enhanced
security and peace of mind during
extended vacations. COPS
volunteers patrol and visit
registered single-family homes
in non -gated communities
while residents are away for two
weeks or more. These ongoing
visits include checking for
broken windows and other
obvious problems which are
reported to the resident and to police.
The men and women of Palm Desert COPS take great
pride in giving back to our beautiful City and assisting the
Palm Desert Police in a safe, non -confrontational way.
We hope that you will consider joining our COPS
team. For more information, please call 760-862-9848.
FREE SAFE DISPOSAL OF
USED OIL AND OIL FILTERS
Palm Desert residents can safely dispose of their used oil and oil
filters in a convenient and environmentally friendly way at the
City's Used Oil and Oil Filter Recycling Event on Saturday, March
2, from 8 to 11 a.m. at AutoZone, located at 73605 Highway 111
(near Jensen's).
Used oil must be stored properly in a clean, sealed,
uncontaminated container. Workers at the event will accept up

FEATURE WILDFLOWERS AND DESERT
First Weekend fun continues this spring with a colorful
lineup of free events highlighted by awe inspiring
celebrations of wildflowers in March and art in April.
Held on Saturday, March 2, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.,
at Palm Desert's Civic Center Park, the Coachella Valley
Wildflower Festival celebrates its 12th year of promoting
wellness, recreation, and the beautiful outdoors. In
addition to great wildflower viewing and beautiful art,
the festival features a Kids' Zone, and a 5K fun run. There
will be raffles, vendors, exhibitors, and live music in the
beer and wine garden, as well as food and beverages
for purchase.
The Festival is normally held at the Santa Rosa and
San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Visitor Center,
but the recent government shutdown forced organizers
with Friends of the Desert Mountains to move the event to
Civic Center Park, 43900 San Pablo Avenue.
Friends of the Desert Mountains will be offering
wildflower walks throughout the month of March as well
as a Wildflower Bus Tour that attendees can sign up for
at the festival. Winter rains have laid the groundwork for
a potentially memorable wildflower season and all are
encouraged to come out and enjoy nature's fireworks as
part of a fun day.

In April, First Weekend celebrates the return of Desert X. The
biannual Coachella Valley -wide art exhibition caused an international
sensation when it debuted in 2017 and expectations are high this year
for more jaw dropping artworks in fantastic desert settings.
Palm Desert will be home to two distinct DesertX art installations
as well as a Desert X Hub, open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at
73660 El Paseo, where art enthusiasts and the simply curious can
go for more information about this unique desert happening.
The Wildflower Festival and Desert X are just two of the many
exciting events featured as part of First Weekend Palm Desert. For more
information about First Weekend events, visit pdfirstweekend.com.
