A PUBLICATION OF THE CITY OF PALM DESERT
The City of Palm Desert has made it easier than ever
for its residents and business owners to ask questions
and provide feedback about current City projects and
initiatives. Engage Palm Desert, the City’s new online
public engagement platform, allows the community to
contribute ideas, review what others are interested in,
connect with City Hall staff, and ultimately influence
decision-making on local issues, all in one central and
convenient website.
The platform provides the opportunity to weigh in
on specific projects as well as offer comments of a more
general nature. Current Engage Palm Desert project
pages include the Presidents’ Plaza renovation and
the Walk and Roll Palm Desert initiative, which looks
to identify recommendations for improving the City’s
walking and bicycling network.
Residents can use the Map Palm Desert page on an
ongoing basis to identify things they love about and ways
to improve their community. Sharing those new ideas is
as simple as dropping a pin on the map and typing a
related comment or suggestion. General questions can
be added to the Ask City Hall page, making it easier than
ever before for residents to connect with Palm Desert
City Hall.
City staff members monitor Engage Palm Desert,
responding to questions and comments daily. Feedback is
essential because Palm Desert’s committees, commissions,
and City Council consider it in their decisions. Recently
the public was asked to vote on a public art installation
for the San Pablo and San Gorgonio roundabout. This
survey received several hundred votes, and the City
Council ultimately selected the top vote-getter due to the
public’s preference.
To get started using the interactive features on Engage
Palm Desert, new users will need to register on the
engagepalmdesert.com website, creating a username
and answering a few demographic questions. This
information is used only by the City of Palm Desert and
not made known to any other users or third parties.
New content is being added daily, so be sure to check
back often to see the latest updates.

High-quality childcare provides a safe and healthy environment
for children of working parents. In addition, it helps children
develop skills they will need for success in school and in their social
lives outside of school.
The City of Palm Desert supports the development of childcare
centers within the City. Since 2005, Palm Desert has collected
a Childcare Mitigation Impact Fee on new, non-residential
development which has helped in the creation of dozens of
childcare spaces throughout the City.
Operators of childcare facilities who would like to learn how they
could expand in Palm Desert are encouraged to learn more about
the City programs that are available to help them do so. These
opportunities are outlined on CityofPalmDesert.org/Childcare, or
for more information, please contact the City’s Development Services
Department at (760) 776-6484.
On Sunday, February 13, the Palm Desert Half
Marathon and 5K returns as the Coachella Valley’s longest

mountains. Each participant will receive an official race
t-shirt, finisher medal, post-race food, and a bib with
official chip timing. There will be awards for overall
winners and the top three in each age group division.
There will also be a one-kilometer Kids Run on a closed course for kids 13 and under.
Kids Run participants will receive a finisher medal and post-race food.
All races begin and end at beautiful Civic Center Park. The half-marathon begins at 7
a.m.; the 5K at 7:30 a.m.; and the Kids Run at 10 a.m. For more information and to register,

The Gerald R. Ford Chapter of
Mensch International Foundation
will hold its 12th annual International
Holocaust Remembrance Day
ceremony on Thursday, January 27,
at 1 p.m. at Palm Desert’s Civic
Center Park.
More than a decade ago, the
United Nations General Assembly
designated International Holocaust Remembrance Day as an annual day set aside to
remember the Holocaust’s many victims, celebrate those who survived, and remind the world
to never forget what happened. The official date, January 27, coincides with the liberation of
the Auschwitz concentration camp.
The Palm Desert event will feature the beautiful singing voices of Cantor Joseph Gole and
Chabad Rabbi Benjamin Lew. The ceremony will feature additional musical performances and
speakers, as well. A remembrance walk from the park amphitheater to the nearby Palm Desert
Holocaust Memorial will serve as a moving conclusion to the program. Students and teachers
from local schools are expected to be in attendance.
Civic Center Park is located at Fred Waring Drive and San Pablo Avenue. Limited
seating will be provided, and attendees are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets to
participate in comfort. For more information or to volunteer, please email Steve Geiger at

The City of Palm Desert’s Traffic Signal
Cabinet Beautification Project is a public art
program that transforms traffic signal cabinets
into distinctive works of art, creating a more
vibrant and appealing streetscape.
Last year, with the support of the Palm
Desert City Council, the Palm Desert Cultural
Arts Committee brought forward a project in
support of equality and social justice. A call
for artists was released to submit proposals
for traffic signal cabinets throughout the city.
One of three words—Equality, Kindness, or
Respect—had to be incorporated in the final
design.
In the end, three local artists were selected
by the Cultural Arts Committee and approved
by the City Council to create the signal
cabinet artwork:
• Ronald Del Cid chose Equality for the cabinet
located at Highway 111 and Monterey Avenue
• John Morse chose Kindness for the cabinet
located at El Paseo and San Luis Rey
• Lenny Katz chose Respect for the cabinet
located at Highway 111 and Fred Waring Drive
For more information about this
project, please contact the City’s Public Art
Department at (760) 837-1663.
Work continues at the Presidents’ Plaza
East and West Parking Lots where the City
of Palm Desert is repaving, beautifying,
and improving these heavily used
downtown lots. New features include
enhanced landscaping, modernized trash
enclosures with ramps, parking canopies
with and without solar, and improved
pedestrian walkways.
Recognizing the vital importance of
these lots to the scores of businesses and
their patrons on El Paseo, Highway 111,
and adjacent frontage roads between
Larkspur Lane and Portola Avenue, the
project team implemented a two-phase
paving plan to provide a more drivable
and walkable surface as work continues.
This temporary surface will receive its final layer
of asphalt when utility work is completed.
Businesses remain open and are
accessible throughout project construction.
The public’s continued support and
patronage of the many businesses that
utilize these parking lots is appreciated.
At these late stages of the project, the
presence of multiple contractors at the site
requires regular reconfiguration of vehicular
access. To receive the latest updates on
the Presidents’ Plaza East and West Parking
Lots Improvement Project, you can text

Palm Desert’s Art Documentary Film Series returns
for its 14th year in 2022 with a fresh lineup of
compelling films designed for lovers of inspiring and
thought-provoking cinema.
The free, art-themed documentary series begins
Wednesday, February 16 with a screening of Iconicity,
a road trip across through the Southern California
deserts and the artist communities that thrive here.
The film looks at work as diverse as Leonard Knight’s
Salvation Mountain in Slab City and Ricardo Breceda’s
oversized metal sculptures in Borrego Springs to the
contemporary installations by Desert X.
The 2022 film series is presented by the City of Palm Desert Public Art Department
and the University of California, Riverside Palm Desert Center. Films screen in the
auditorium at UCR Palm Desert, 75080 Frank Sinatra Drive, with moderated discussion
on the third Wednesday of the month, February through April, at 6 p.m. Remaining
films will be announced at a later date.

COVID-19 test is required to attend. Additional protocols may be required.

This February, hundreds of athletes ages 35 to 90 will come to Palm Desert to
compete in the Annual Palm Desert Senior Games and International Sports Festival.
Registration is now open for this popular event, which will take place at venues
throughout the city from February 1 through February 6.
The first senior games of the year in California, Palm Desert’s festival is unique
among other official senior games in the State as it allows athletes, ages 35 and up,
to enjoy great competition in a variety of sports including track and field, soccer,
golf, pickleball, table tennis, volleyball, and more. A variety of age divisions allows
athletes to compete against their peers in individual and team sports while chasing
gold, silver, and bronze medals.
The Desert Recreation District and the City of Palm Desert host the Senior Games,
which will begin with an Opening Ceremony at the tennis courts in Civic Center
Park on Friday, February 4 at 9:00 a.m.
The deadline for athletes to register is Thursday, January 27. Spectator admission

JANUARY/FEBRUARY
2022The City of Palm Desert recently celebrated
the grand opening of the Palm Desert iHUB,
a technology-focused business incubator
established in partnership with the Coachella
Valley Economic Partnership (CVEP) and the
California State University of San Bernardino
Palm Desert Campus (CSUSB). Through these
partnerships, the iHUB is poised to make a
positive long-term impact on the economy of
the Coachella Valley.
The iHUB was designed to attract
technology-based entrepreneurial startup
businesses, to promote the creation of high
wage-earning jobs, and to house CSUSB’s
cybersecurity, entrepreneurship, and
hospitality programs.
Day-to-day operations at the iHUB
are managed by CVEP, the Coachella
Valley’s regional economic development
organization. CVEP is also responsible for
selecting businesses to incubate in the
space and mentoring them throughout
their tenure at the iHUB. iHUB businesses
are also offered an opportunity to work
with the CSUSB students as it aligns with
their business.
The iHUB is located across the street from
the CSUSB Palm Desert Campus at 37023 Cook
Street, Suite 102. This proximity allows it access
to the university’s CENIC optical fiber network
that can be configured to operate at bandwidths
up to 100Gbps. This bandwidth speed will
allow incubating businesses to develop products
or conduct research at a faster speed than is
available elsewhere within the city.
For more information on how to become
an iHUB business, visit CVEP’s iHUB application
page at cvep.com/apply-to-ihub-incubator.
