Residents are invited to view the plan and take a short survey. In June, the Commission will analyze the feedback and decide whether to place a half-cent per dollar sales tax measure on the November ballot. Information: TrafficReliefPlan.org Fifty years ago, a group of far-reaching visionaries set aside a portion of local desert as the Living Desert Reserve – a place where visitors could learn about and value the unique plants and animals that call the desert home. In that first year, 5,000 guests experienced the local flora and fauna amid the trails and spectacular views. Today, The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens highlights desert plants and animals from around the world along with local and global conservation and education programs. This past year, attendance exceeded 500,000 guests, with more than 10 million visitors since 1970. Now, more than ever, The Living Desert’s role in global conservation is a critical one. The Living Desert is working to strengthen its ability to teach upcoming generations to conserve and share our planet’s precious resources with all living creatures. Celebrating its grand opening Saturday, March 21, Australian Adventures offers an interactive experience featuring wallabies, as well as emu, echidna, tawny frogmouth, bettong, kookaburra, budgie, blue-tongued skink, and bearded dragon. “Celebrating our 50th year is a wonderful milestone for The Living Desert, and we are thankful for our generous members and donors who have contributed to our success,” said Allen Monroe, the zoo’s president. “We honor our past and look to the future as excitement builds for our expansion and the impact we will continue to make on conservation efforts on a global scale.” In the coming years, new African species also will be introduced at The Living Desert in dramatic, immersive habitats. Critically endangered African black rhinos will arrive first followed by majestic lions and a new event center with dramatic views into the lion habitat. The Living Desert thanks every visitor, member, donor, and volunteer for making a difference and their continued support. For more information, please visit livingdesert.org. FIFTY WONDERFULLY WILD YEARS OF THE LIVING DESERT Dates to Remember Daylight Saving Time Begins March 8 First Day of Spring March 19 Annual Clean Up Day April 18 EARTH DAY April 22 Join the City of Palm Desert in celebrating 50 years of Earth Day on April 22 by remembering to reduce, reuse, and recycle. In anticipation of the big day, the City is hosting a used oil recycling event on Saturday, March 7, from 9 to 11 a.m. that gives Palm Desert residents a convenient and environmentally friendly way to safely dispose of their used oil and oil filters. The event will take place at AutoZone, located at 73605 Highway 111 (near Jensen’s). Workers at the event will accept up to five gallons of used oil per vehicle. Participants who turn in a used oil filter will receive a free one of equal or lesser value. All participants will receive a free shop rag, funnel, and drainer while supplies last. Other ways to love the earth and support sustainability include composting. The public is invited to free classes for backyard composting at 9 a.m. and vermicomposting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, at the Coachella Valley Water District, located at 75515 Hovley Lane East. Other Earth Day related events include Palm Desert’s annual Neighborhood Clean-Up on Saturday, April 18. For more information about the Clean-Up and how you can participate, please see the enclosed flyer or call Burrtec Waste & Recycling Services at 760-340-2113. To learn more about recycling and what you can do to protect our precious environment, visit PalmDesertRecycles.com. Celebrate Earth Day’s 50th Birthday The Palm Desert Community Gallery will highlight artwork from Ryan Holland in its new exhibition – Souls Living in Harmony – on display March 27 through June 12. A public reception will honor the artist on Monday, April 6, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Holland, a resident of Rancho Mirage, evolves and integrates future art to the open, connected and abstract minded viewer. Taking on the alter ego of Cruz Studios, he seeks to embody art in a form that is beyond human and give an experience that is out of body to transcend the mind. He has given live art demonstrations at the Joshua Tree and Coachella music festivals, as well as with national recording artists Post Malone and Waka Flocka Flame. His current exhibition of abstract works emphasizes majestic concepts, the fluidity and flow of expression, and the future of art. The Community Gallery is located in City Hall, 73510 Fred Waring Drive, and is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, please call 760-346-0611, ext. 664, or visit www.palmdesertart.org. Some of the Coachella Valley’s best performers will once again take the stage at the McCallum Theatre on April 16, 17, and 18 as part of the 22nd annual Open Call. Presented by McCallum Theatre Education, this popular talent competition for all ages teams local artists with staff and crew to present four visually stunning, energetic performances that are fun for the entire family. Audience members vote for their favorite acts at the Thursday and Friday evening and Saturday matinee performances. Winners will be announced at Saturday evening’s final performance and receive prizes ranging from $500 for talent achievement to a $2,500 grand prize. Tickets start at only $12 and performances sell out each year. To get your tickets, contact the McCallum Theatre box office, 73000 Fred Waring Drive. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.mccallumtheatre.com or by calling 760-340-2787. Film Series Concludes with Fascinating Documentaries Visit RepresentPD.org for Information on Election Changes Community Gallery Features Souls Living in Harmony The 2020 Palm Desert Public Art Documentary Film Series continues on March 19 with a free screening of YARN. This unique documentary introduces viewers to the artists who are redefining the tradition of knit and crochet, bringing yarn out of the house and into the world. YARN weaves together wool graffiti artists, circus performers, and structural designers into a visually-striking look at the women who are making a creative stance while building one of modern art’s hottest trends. A discussion of the film will follow the screening. The popular series of free public art-themed documentary films concludes on April 16 with Jean-Michel Basquiat – The Radiant Child. Centered on a rare interview that director and friend Tamra Davis shot with Jean-Michel Basquiat more than 20 years ago, this film chronicles the meteoric rise and fall of the young artist. In the crime-ridden New York City of the 1970s, he covers the city with the graffiti tag ‘SAMO.’ In 1981 he puts paint on canvas for the first time, and by 1983 he is an artist with “rock star status” achieving critical and commercial success while being confronted by racism from peers. The 2020 documentary film series is presented by the City of Palm Desert Public Art Department and the University of California, Riverside Palm Desert Graduate Center. Films screen on third Thursdays, January through April, at 6 p.m. in the auditorium at UCR Palm Desert, 75080 Frank Sinatra Drive. Admission is free, but reservations are recommended. For more information and reservations, please call 760-834-0800 or register online at palmdesert.ucr.edu/public-art-documentary-series. OPEN CALL Returns to the McCallum The way that Palm Desert elects its City Council is changing. The City wants all residents to understand the changes and ensure their continued participation in the democratic processes that have built Palm Desert into the beautiful and successful community it is today. The changes, which go into effect this November, are the result of a legal settlement related to the California Voting Rights Act (CVRA). The settlement helps the City avoid a costly legal battle and allows the City to propose a unique solution to embrace the CVRA’s goals while retaining a model that emphasizes cohesion and unity within our community. The settlement proposes a new downtown district with roughly 20% of the City’s population and represented by one elected City Council member, as well as a larger surrounding district containing about 80% of the population from which four Council members will be elected at large. The new downtown district, which will be focused on the Civic Center area and surrounding neighborhoods, helps fulfill longtime Palm Desert goals identified in the City’s strategic and general plans and will result in a more fully defined downtown. The downtown district also aligns Palm Desert’s electoral process with the CVRA ensuring that the voices and votes of all Palm Desert residents are heard and translate to meaningful representation. The settlement also calls for the implementation of ranked choice voting in both districts. Ranked choice voting, used by multiple government agencies in California and elsewhere, gives voters the power to rank their candidates in order of preference and has been recognized as a voting method that can help ensure that the candidate preferences of all voters are better reflected in election outcomes. For more information about ranked choice voting, the proposed districts, a timeline, and more, please visit representpd.org.
