What’s Inside
Get ready to wave your flags and wear your red, white,
and blue, because Palm Desert is pulling out all the stops for
its star-spangled Independence Day celebration on Friday,
July 4! This free, family-friendly extravaganza takes place at
Civic Center Park, and it’s the place to be for fireworks, food,
fun, and music under the desert sky.
The party kicks off early with kid-friendly games and
activities starting at 4 p.m. in the grassy area just behind
the Family YMCA of the Desert. From face painting to lawn
games, it’s the perfect pre-show playground for kids and
parents to enjoy time together.
By 5 p.m., the air will be filled with the irresistible aromas
of delicious eats as food trucks and vendors roll in, serving up
crowd favorites from sizzling street tacos to sweet treats and
cool drinks. There will be no shortage of delicious offerings,
ranging from classic American comfort food to new and
innovative options, you’ll find something for every taste.
As the sun dips behind the mountains, the Swing Cats Big
Band will take the stage at 7:30 p.m., bringing their high-
energy mix of American swing and pop classics. Their lively
sounds set the stage for a festive evening as we count down
to the big show.
Then, at 9 p.m. sharp, the sky will erupt in a 20-minute
fireworks spectacular, choreographed to a heart-pounding
FIREWORKS, FOOD & FUN ON THE FOURTH!
soundtrack of patriotic tunes. Tune your radios to Mix 100.5
or 98.5 The Bull to fully experience the musical magic as
fireworks paint the night sky with bursts of red, white, and
blue. It’s a dazzling display you won’t want to miss!
Bring your blankets, low chairs, and picnic baskets, just leave
the alcohol, smoking, and barbecues at home. For everyone’s
safety, golf carts and personal fireworks are not permitted in
the park for the Palm Desert Independence Day celebration.
Parking is available at Civic Center Park (73510 Fred
Waring Drive) via Fred Waring only, until lots are full.
Additional parking is available at the Palm Desert Aquatic
Center and College of the Desert. To make things even easier,
a free, air-conditioned shuttle will run from The Gardens on El
Paseo (El Paseo and San Pablo Avenue) to the park between
6 and 10 p.m., so you can skip the parking hassle and ride in
cool comfort.
For those with sensitivities to loud noises, the City of
Palm Desert will be offering a Sensory Safe Space during our
Independence Day fireworks display from 8 – 9:30 p.m. at
the Portola Community Center, 45480 Portola Avenue. Ear
plugs will also be available at the event.
Celebrate freedom, community, and summertime fun
with a night that’s sure to sparkle! For more details, visit
PalmDesert.gov.
A new California law, SB 1053, will phase out all
single-use plastic carryout bags at supermarkets,
convenience stores, retailers, pharmacies, and other
stores beginning in 2026. This closes a loophole in
the existing plastic bag ban, targeting thicker plastic
bags that are currently provided. To help residents
prepare, the City of Palm Desert will be distributing
free reusable bags made from recycled plastic bottles at
upcoming City events, including the Independence Day
celebration, Fall Concerts in the Park, and more.
Bringing your own bag not only helps the
environment, it also saves you from extra fees! Let’s
work together to reduce waste and keep Palm Desert
beautiful.
For more information on the statewide ban on plastic
bags, visit: www.engagepalmdesert.com/PlasticBags.
The City of Palm Desert offers programs to support
residents with affordable housing and essential home
repairs. Income-qualified households earning up to
120% of Riverside County’s Area Median Income
(currently $97,500 for a family of four) can join the
Affordable Housing Program interest list to access
resale homes priced between $170,000 and $290,000.
Applicants should have good credit, savings, steady
employment, and pre-loan approval.
Low-income homeowners may also qualify for the
Emergency Home Improvement Program, which provides
financial assistance for critical repairs like water damage,
HVAC, or water heater replacement, and roof repairs.
For more details, visit palmdesert.gov/housing or
contact the Housing Division at 760-776-6412.

The Fourth of July is full of fun for people, but it can be a stressful, and even dangerous, time for pets. Between
fireworks and festive gatherings, a few simple precautions can help keep your furry friends calm and safe.
Loud fireworks can trigger anxiety in animals, sometimes causing them to panic and run away. The
American Veterinary Medical Association recommends leaving pets at home rather than bringing them to
celebrations. Keep them indoors in a quiet, secure space, and consider using white noise or calming music to
help mask the sounds.
Summer heat is another reason to leave fido at home, especially in the desert. Dogs and cats are more
vulnerable to heatstroke than people, and even a short time outdoors without water or shade can take a toll.
Before the festivities begin, double-check your pet’s ID tags and ensure their microchip information is up
to date. Taking a current photo is also a good idea, just in case they do get out. Be sure to bring pets indoors
well in advance of the start of fireworks in the area.
With a little planning, you can ensure a safe and stress-free holiday for the whole family, including the four-
legged members. Sign up for fireworks alerts at PalmDesert.gov/Newsletters.
KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE ALL SUMMER LONG
FIND RELIEF FROM THE HEAT AT A COOL CENTER
As summer temperatures soar in the Coachella
Valley, Palm Desert offers designated Cool Centers to
help residents beat the heat. When the temperature,
or heat index, hits 100 degrees or higher, these air-
conditioned spaces open to provide safe, comfortable
relief for individuals, families, and even pets.
Cool Centers, including the Palm Desert
Community Center, Palm Desert Library, and the
Joslyn Center (for those 55+), offer access to water,
restrooms, and a place to rest and recharge out
of the heat. They are designed to be inclusive,
welcoming up to three pets per person, as long as
certain safety requirements are met. Pets must be
current on vaccinations, crated while indoors, and
accompanied by their owners at all times. Be sure
to bring any needed supplies such as leashes, food,
water dishes, and cleanup materials.
To help keep the space peaceful and pleasant
for everyone, visitors are asked to avoid sleeping
or using large personal devices or fans. If you’re
listening to music or watching videos, headphones
are required. Children under 16 should be
accompanied by an adult, and disruptive behavior
may result in being asked to leave.
Taking time to cool down at one of these
locations can make a big difference, especially during
peak afternoon hours. These simple guidelines help
ensure everyone, people and pets alike, can stay
safe, cool, and comfortable during extreme heat. For
more information on preventing heat-related illness,
visit capriverside.org.
Palm Desert continues to champion sustainability
with practical programs that empower residents and
businesses to reduce waste and energy use, all while
helping to protect our unique desert environment.
A key part of the City’s green initiative is organics
recycling, and you can help make a difference! Instead
of sending food scraps, yard trimmings, and food-
soiled paper to landfills, residents can help turn these
materials into nutrient-rich compost that nourishes
local soil and helps fight climate change. Composting
not only cuts down on landfill waste, it also
supports healthier soil that captures carbon from the
atmosphere, making it a powerful climate action tool.
Being part of composting efforts in Palm Desert is
easy and convenient. Simply collect your food scraps,
grass clippings, coffee grounds, used napkins, and
even greasy pizza boxes, then toss them into your
green Burrtec bin. Standard plastic bags can be used,
as the composting facility will handle separation. Visit
engagepalmdesert.com/organics-recycling for a
detailed guide of compostable items.
As we work toward zero waste, Palm Desert is also
encouraging residents to take charge of their energy
use, especially during the summer months when air
conditioners are running full tilt. Cooling systems can
account for nearly half of your home’s energy use, but
there are simple ways to save without sacrificing comfort.
Start by ensuring that your AC unit is in top
shape with seasonal maintenance. Seal up any leaky
doors or windows to keep the cool air inside, and
set your thermostat to 78°F when you’re home
to help reduce your energy bill by up to 10%
annually. Ceiling fans can help circulate cool air more
efficiently, and if you’re looking to escape the heat
entirely, take a break at local spots like The Shops at
Palm Desert, the Palm Desert Aquatic Center, or the
newly upgraded Palm Desert Library.
Palm Desert residents can take advantage of local
rebate programs to help reduce energy costs during
the summer. Imperial Irrigation District offers a program
that offers a 25% rate reduction from June through
September, while Southern California Edison’s Summer
Discount Plan can provide $160 in bill credits for
participating in energy-saving efforts during high-
demand periods.
From composting at home to conserving energy,
every small action adds up. Together, we can keep
Palm Desert beautiful, resilient, and sustainable for
generations to come.

This summer, Palm Desert is making major
investments in street improvements across the city,
with a spotlight on the highly anticipated El Paseo
repaving project. Beginning June 1, 2025, the City
kicked off a capital improvement project to resurface
the roadway and enhance pedestrian safety along El
Paseo, from Highway 74 east to Highway 111. Palm
Desert’s premier shopping and dining destination will
soon feature smooth new pavement and upgraded
raised crosswalks built with durable paver stones,
designed to make the corridor safer, more attractive,
and more enjoyable for all.
Construction is being completed in carefully staged
phases to minimize disruption, with both directions of
traffic remaining open utilizing the side of the street not
actively under construction and all businesses operating
as usual. While on-street parking near active zones will
be temporarily limited, plenty of public parking remains
available nearby. On-street dining decks have been
removed to make way for roadwork, and pedestrian
access will be maintained throughout the project. Work
is expected to wrap up by the end of September.
In coordination with the El Paseo upgrades,
maintenance is also scheduled for Presidents Plaza #3
located just south of El Paseo. This area will undergo
a slurry seal treatment and restriping that has been
planned in a way that it won’t impact parking
while the adjacent portion of El Paseo is under
construction.
Beyond El Paseo, several other street projects are
underway this summer:
• Eldorado Drive will undergo full pavement
replacement between Hovley Lane and Frank
Sinatra Drive, and restriping between Country
Club Drive and Frank Sinatra Drive to improve
traffic flow.
• Highway 111 at Parkview Drive will undergo
bridge repairs, with periodic westbound lane
closures. Traffic signals will be adjusted to help
reduce delays.
• The Summer Slurry Project will apply crack
sealant and slurry seal to selected arterial and
residential streets, with nighttime work on major
roads and daytime work in neighborhoods.
These Projects play a key role in maintaining and
enhancing the safety, functionality, and beauty of
Palm Desert’s streets. For detailed timelines, maps,
and updates on how construction may affect you, visit
EngagePalmDesert.com/streets.

PLAYGROUND UPGRADES COMING TO CIVIC CENTER PARK
Palm Desert’s Civic Center Park is getting a major upgrade this summer, with a full renovation of its popular playground designed to better serve children and families
from across the community. With a focus on safety, accessibility, and fun, the improvements reflect the City’s commitment to creating a welcoming, inclusive space where
kids can play, explore, and connect.
Construction is expected to begin in late July and continue through September. During this time, the playground will be temporarily closed to the public as crews work to
transform the area into a modern, family-friendly destination.
The project includes the installation of brand-new play equipment, improved surfacing, and multiple new shade structures to protect children and families from the
summer sun. Uneven concrete surrounding the playground, which posed trip hazards and accessibility challenges, will be removed and replaced with flat, ADA-compliant
pathways to ensure a safer and more comfortable experience for all visitors.
In addition to replacing outdated and damaged equipment (including a slide removed in late 2024), the new design features accessible play structures that allow children
of all abilities to participate. To complete the transformation, the City will repaint nearby pavilions and restroom exteriors, and refresh surrounding landscaping to create an
inviting, clean, and vibrant environment.
These upgrades are rooted in community input. The City conducted public outreach and surveys to ensure the renovation reflects what matters most to residents, and
those ideas were incorporated directly into the final design.
Whether it’s climbing, sliding, or simply relaxing under a shady tree, the revitalized Civic Center Park playground will soon offer something for everyone. It’s more than
just a playground, it’s a space for community, connection, and lifelong memories.
