All films are free and will be held at 6 p.m. in the auditorium at the UCR Palm Desert Graduate Center, 75-080 Frank Sinatra Drive. The new public art film series, which debuts Wednesday, January 21, with Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem, and continues through March, is presented by the City of Palm Desert Public Art Department and the University of California, Riverside Palm Desert Graduate Center. The documentary Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem chronicles artist Dale Chihuly's exhibition at the Tower of David Museum in Old Jerusalem. The film follows the world’s most famed glass artist as he leads an international team of artists in mounting more than a dozen large-scale glass sculptures within the ancient citadel. The visually spectacular exhibition drew more than one million visitors. A conversation with award- winning Coachella Valley artists Jerry Hirschmann, a glass blower, and Michael Paul Thiry, a metal sculptor, will follow the screening. On Wednesday, February 18, Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision will be shown. The Academy Award winning documentary profiles the sculptor, public artist, and architect who designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Lin was only 21 when she created the piece. The documentary shows the struggles that the artist went through after the Memorial was commissioned, as well as a decade of her public projects, including the Civil Rights Memorial, the Yale Women’s Table, and the Juanita Peace Chapel. A discussion with Phillip K. Smith III, building designer, public artist, and founder of The Art Office in Indio, will follow the film. Seniors Invited to Compete at Sports Festival Fred Waring Drive Median Construction of a median and installation of landscaping was recently completed on Fred Waring from Washington Street to California Drive. Trees, plants, boulders, flagstone, and new irrigation were installed in the median. Monterey Avenue Median This joint project, between the cities of Palm Desert and Rancho Mirage, involved construction of a landscaped median island on Monterey between Hovley Lane West and Country Club Drive. The completed project includes attractive, mature palm trees. Monterey Avenue and Interstate 10 An environmental study and final design are underway for a ramp modification project that would provide a loop onramp from northbound Monterey to westbound Interstate 10. The westbound off ramp will be relocated to exit on Varner Road. A contract for construction is expected to be awarded in early 2010. This project will reduce congestion on northbound Monterey and improve the access to westbound I-10. Portola Avenue and Interstate 10 Interchange Environmental studies and a new connection report have been completed for review and approval by Caltrans and the Federal Highway Administration for the proposed interchange. Construction of this project, which will provide additional access to I-10, is scheduled to begin in 2012. Portola Avenue and Frank Sinatra Drive Design is underway for traffic signals, drainage, street widening, the relocation of Edison transmission lines, and other improvements at the intersection. Cook Street Intersections Design is nearing completion for drainage and other improvements at two Cook Street intersections: Country Club Drive and Hovley Lane East. Changes include eliminating dips and improving drainage and traffic flow. Construction is scheduled to start in mid-2010. Traffi c Signal on Highway 74 and Mesa View Design is underway for the installation of new traffic signals that will improve traffic flow and safety at this intersection. Construction is scheduled to start in mid-2009. Pavement Preservation Program This past fall, contracts were awarded to slurry seal various city streets and overlay the pavement on Mesa View Drive between Highway 74 and Portola Avenue. Corner curb ramps were reconstructed to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act standards. Additional street pavement overlays, including portions of Fred Waring Drive between Highway 111 and San Pascual, are scheduled to be completed this spring. By constantly working to improve Palm Desert’s roads and other infrastructure, the City helps maintain the community’s economic vitality and enhances the quality of life for residents and visitors. The Public Works Department provides the following overview of current and future projects. Challenging economic times mean that more people are struggling to make ends meet this holiday season than in years past. In response to this need, the City of Palm Desert, in cooperation with local organizations and businesses, has launched a food drive to benefit Food In Need of Distribution (FIND). A non-profit, community-based organization that serves the entire Coachella Valley, FIND provides food through its own food bank and through a number of local organizations that distribute it to children, seniors, working families, and others in need of assistance. The public is invited to participate in this worthwhile effort which will continue through February 28. For more information, please call 346-0611, ext. 331. University Park East is a 2½-acre neighborhood park that features playgrounds, a shaded picnic area, a basketball court, restrooms, a community garden, and ample green space. The park is located at 74-902 University Park Drive. Almost as large and just as fun, University Dog Park is the largest dog park in Palm Desert. Located at 74-802 University Park Drive, the park is divided into sections for large dogs and small dogs (weighing less than 25 pounds). The park is equipped with restrooms for dog owners. Both parks are located southwest of Cook Street and Gerald Ford Drive. The parks recently celebrated their grand openings and are now open daily from dawn until 10 p.m. For more information, please call 346-0611, ext. 464. Coming soon to homeowners in the City of Palm Desert is a unique chance to see how your energy use measures up. Set To Save is providing residential customers of Southern California Edison and Southern California Gas Company free customized Home Energy Reports illustrating how much energy they use compared to 100 similar households in their area. Palm Desert is one of the first communities in the nation to receive this free service, thanks to the Set To Save partnership. These customized Home Energy Reports are a groundbreaking tool that researchers say can inspire homeowners to cut their energy use up to 20 percent. Homeowners can utilize the reports to set their own energy goals and track their improvement. People who use more energy also will receive valuable tips on how to reduce their consumption and cut their utility bills at the same time. They will also be helping Palm Desert reach its goal of cutting energy use and demand in the community by 30 percent over five years. Initial reports detailing electricity use will start arriving in mailboxes early this year, followed shortly thereafter by natural gas reports. Both reports will arrive several times each year. When they reach your mailbox, please take a good look at them. They can save you a lot of money and it won’t cost you a dime. For more information, please call the Office of Energy Management at 837-0287.
