YOUR COMMUNITY
A PUBLICATION OF THE CITY OF PALM DESERT
Celebrate our nation’s independence and enjoy
a once-in-a-lifetime shared experience by joining
in a community-wide patriotic listening party on
Saturday, July 4, starting at 9 p.m.
This safe and mostly sane celebration encourages
everyone in Palm Desert to tune in and turn up their
radios or other devices as two local radio stations – 98.5
the Bull and U92.7 – play a section of favorite patriotic
tunes in synchronized stereo. The goals is to let music
and freedom ring out under the stars for all to hear.
Residents and visitors are invited to post pictures of their
listening party experiences on social media using the
hashtag #UnitePalmDesert.
The City is also working with select local restaurants
that will offer Independence Day “picnic baskets,” which
holiday revelers can pre-order and enjoy at home before,
during, or after the listening party.
The musical pyrotechnics that will highlight this
unique event are being offered in lieu of the City’s
traditional annual fireworks display and concert in Civic
Center Park due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Listening
party participants are encouraged to observe all public
health guidelines including social distancing and face
coverings, if appropriate.
The listening party is part of
Unite Palm Desert, a campaign
created to support and rally Palm
Desert residents and businesses
through the pandemic and
beyond.
In addition to fun events, Unite
Palm Desert includes serious initiatives
such as the City’s economic relief package, which is
expected to deliver up to $3 million in public support
across the community. The umbrella relief package
includes no interest loans to small businesses, a hospitality
incentive program, community grants, emergency rental
assistance, homelessness assistance, and more.
Unite Palm Desert involves a wide variety of
community and regional partners including: FIND Food
Bank; the Palm Desert Area Chamber of Commerce;
El Paseo Parking & Business Improvement District;
Joslyn Center; Living Desert Zoo & Botanical Gardens;
McCallum Theatre; Palm Desert High School; and Desert
Willow Golf Resort.

760-862-6900. To report issues after 1 a.m.,
please call the Palm Desert Police Department at
760-836-3215.
Although it is 100% preventable, drowning is the leading cause of accidental injury-
related death for children ages 1 to 4 in Riverside County.
Nearly 90% of all drownings and near-drownings occur in backyard pools or spas.
A drowning child can lose consciousness in less than 30 seconds and suffer irreversible
brain damage after just four minutes.
To reduce the threat of drowning, remember the ABCs of water safety:
A – Adult Supervision
Assign an adult to keep their eyes on
children in the water at all times.
B – Barriers
Ensure that pools are protected by fences,
self-closing and self-latching gates, motion
sensors, and window and door alarms.
C – Classes
Parents and caregivers should take CPR and First Aid.
Swimming courses are recommended for children and adults.

Smart Tips
FOR LIVING IN Coyote Country
The return of longer days and warm weather typically means increased activity by coyotes.
A longtime desert resident whose presence here predates the development of Palm Desert’s
homes and businesses, coyotes play an important role in our natural ecosystem controlling
rodents and other potential disease carrying pests.
Coyotes primarily hunt rodents and rabbits, but will take advantage of any opportunity for
an easy meal. When out on the prowl, coyotes will target all available food sources including pet
food, garbage, and domestic animals. You can help protect yourself, your pets, your property,
and the coyotes themselves by following some simple steps.
Never feed or attempt to tame coyotes
Do not leave uneaten pet food outside
Bring pets inside at night and do not leave them outside unattended
Put garbage in tightly closed containers that coyotes cannot tip over
Remove easy sources of water
Pick up fallen fruit and cover compost piles
Put away bird feeders at night to avoid attracting rodents and other coyote prey
If followed by a coyote, make loud noises or throw rocks
A natural part of our beautiful desert, coyotes are here to stay. You can do your part to
encourage coyotes to remain in the wild where they belong by following the aforementioned
tips. For more information, call the California Department of Fish and Wildlife at 909-484-0167.

FIRST PHASE COMPLETE
Reimagined San Pablo
Palm Desert is celebrating another major milestone in the creation
of a new downtown with the recent completion of the first phase of a
reimagined and reconfigured San Pablo Avenue.
The conclusion of major work on the project’s first phase, which
rebuilt San Pablo between Highway 111 and Fred Waring Drive, means
that most of the major infrastructure work has been done. This included
the construction of wider sidewalks, enhanced bike lanes and parking, a
new roundabout at San Pablo and San Gorgonio Way, and the narrowing
of what was a four-lane road to one lane in each direction. San Pablo’s
transformation from a vehicle focused throughway into the heart of a
revitalized city center where walking, biking, and fun are the focus is well
underway
San Pablo is envisioned as a community gathering spot that attracts
nearby residents every day and that can also host special celebrations
and activities, such as Palm Desert’s weekly certified farmer’s market. San
Pablo is important because it serves as a vital artery in the heart of Palm
Desert’s downtown connecting El Paseo and Highway 111 to the south
with the Palm Desert Civic Center, College of the Desert, and CV Link
alternative transportation path to the north.
A few final finishing touches to the new pocket parts and landscaping
remain, but one very important aspect of San Pablo’s new landscape
will not appear immediately. A key element of a reenvisioned San Pablo
is shade, to be achieved via the planting of new shade trees along the
length of the street. Waiting for a tree to grow can be frustrating, but in
a few years, the benefits of the City’s planning and patience will be visible
for all to see when a green and cooling living canopy begins to spread its
way along the street.
Many of the changes to San Pablo were demonstrated in May 2016
during Vision San Pablo, an 11-day demonstration project that gave
residents, local businesses, and visitors an advance look at the proposed
changes along with a street party featuring live music, food trucks, and
children’s activities.
The project’s second phase, which will bring similar changes to the
street between Fred Waring and Magnesia Falls Drive, is expected to
begin construction later this year.
For more information about San Pablo and all of the exciting changes
taking place there, please call 760-776-6384 or visit visionsanpablo.com.
The celebration of our nation’s independence is a joyful occasion,
but the loud noises associated with fireworks and other festivities
on July 4 can be confusing and frightening to pets.
While the City of Palm Desert is not putting on its usual fireworks
display this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, gated communities and
other entities may schedule displays and there are always some people
who ignore the legal prohibition on setting off personal fireworks.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA)
advises pet owners to keep their dogs and cats at home in a quiet,
sheltered, and escape-proof area when fireworks are being set off.
The City of Palm Desert encourages residents this July 4
to follow the SPCA’s advice and protect their pets.
New City Council District Election
Process Coming In November
The City of Palm Desert is making innovative changes to the way
residents choose their local representatives.
Beginning this November, and for the first time in the City’s
47-year-history, Palm Desert will have two City Council districts.
District One includes about one fifth of the City and is generally
located near downtown Palm Desert, the Civic Center, and nearby
neighborhoods. District Two includes the rest of the City.
Because of its smaller size and fewer number of residents, District
One must legally be represented by one City Council member, who will
be elected in November.
District Two, which is much larger and includes roughly four fifths
of the City’s population, will be represented by four City Council
members, two of whom will be elected on November 3 as well. The
other two representatives for District Two will be the City Council
incumbents whose terms expire in November 2022.
PROTECT YOUR PETS ON JULY 4
Due to its strategically
important and central
location, the creation of
District One, helps fulfill
longtime goals identified
in the City’s strategic
and general plans and
will result in a more
fully defined downtown
Palm Desert.
Implementation of
the two districts settles
a lawsuit and aligns Palm
Desert’s electoral process
with the California Voting
Rights Act ensuring
that the voices and
votes of all Palm Desert
residents are heard and
translate to meaningful
representation.
The legal settlement also calls for the implementation of ranked
choice voting, if feasible, in both districts. Due to the COVID-19
pandemic and the limits it has placed on community engagement
and education, the plaintiffs and the City mutually agreed to postpone
implementation of ranked choice voting until the November 2022
election.
The plaintiffs and the City have issued the following joint statement:
“Working together, we have identified a two-district solution that
embraces the goals of the California Voting Rights Acts and preserves
the integrity and unity of our community. This positive outcome
illustrates the value of creativity and cooperation over confrontation.”

The eighth annual Nine Cities Blood Drive Challenge
returns this July with Coachella Valley communities competing
head-to-head to inspire the most lifesaving donations.
This year’s drive takes place on Saturday, July 11, from
8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Palm Desert Community Center. In
light of the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing, regular
cleaning, and other public health and safety measures will
be in place to protect donors and workers at the blood
drive. Donors, workers and everyone who attends will be
required to wear face coverings, and undergo temperature
and COVID-19 symptoms checks before accessing the
donor waiting area.
The need has never been greater as the COVID-19
pandemic has had significantly reduced blood donations.
Summer is the most challenging time for blood supplies
in the Coachella Valley and your generosity could save a
life while helping Palm Desert reclaim the total donations
title that our community won six years ago. Donors will
receive, while supplies last, a special edition Nine Cities
Blood Drive t-shirt.
Donors must be at least 15 years of age – donors under
17 require proof of their date of birth and a signed parental
consent form (available at the drive) – weigh at least 115
pounds, and feel well on drive day. A photo ID is also required.
Donors should maintain their regular meal schedules and
increase fluid intake (water is best) in the 24 hours prior to
donating.
Donors who are unable to attend the drive are encouraged
to donate in Palm Desert’s name anytime between July 1
and August 31 at LifeStream’s Rancho Mirage or La Quinta
centers. They should request that their donations be counted
toward Palm Desert’s Nine Cities Challenge total and will
receive, while supplies last, a commemorative t-shirt.
The Palm Desert Community Center is located at 43900
San Pablo Avenue adjacent to Civic Center Park. For more
information and to make an appointment, please call
LifeStream at 800-879-4484 or visit LStream.org.

Personal fireworks are illegal in
Palm Desert and most Coachella
Valley communities.
Fireworks are not toys.
Fireworks and sparklers are
designed to explode or throw off
showers of hot sparks and they
burn at temperatures exceeding
2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, hotter
than a blow torch.
More fires are reported on
Independence Day in the United
States than on any other day of
the year and fireworks account for
nearly half of those fires.

Department provides a website

The past school year has been difficult for
students, especially for those who are graduating
and missing out on traditional celebrations of
one of life’s great milestones due to the COVID-
19 pandemic.
The City of Palm Desert has joined parents,
educators, and the rest of the community in
responding to this unique situation by honoring
the Class of 2020 in new ways. These non-
traditional celebrations have included: organizing
a Graduation Cruise Night down El Paseo on June
10; producing and putting up banners along the
El Paseo median in celebration of the Class of
2020 graduates; and working with the Chamber
of Commerce to provide congratulatory posters
to local businesses. The City also worked with
the McCallum Theatre on a special message to
graduates that was illuminated on the side of the
Theatre for several weeks.
The City thanks all of the many agencies,
organizations, and partners who are participating
in what has become an inspiring and
unprecedented community-wide celebration.
The City’s efforts are part of Unite Palm Desert,
a campaign created to support and rally Palm
Desert residents and businesses through the
COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath.
At its June 11 meeting, the Palm Desert
City Council issued a proclamation honoring
the Class of 2020 and declared June 11, 2020,
as Palm Desert High School Class of 2020 Day
in Palm Desert. In issuing the proclamation,
the City encouraged all residents to join the
City in celebrating the incredible talents and
accomplishments of each and every graduate.
Whether they are graduating from Palm
Desert High School, College of the Desert, Cal
State San Bernardino’s Palm Desert Campus, or
any of Palm Desert’s other valued educational
institutions, the City offers its heartfelt
congratulations to the Class of 2020 – a class
unlike any other!
Below is a list of graduating seniors from
Palm Desert High School provided by the Desert
Sands Unified School District. Please join us in
saluting them!

The 10 Desert Essentials
1. WATER
Always carry more water than you think you will
need in the desert. Start with two liters and bring
additional water on warmer days/longer hikes.
2. FOOD
Choose healthy snacks and avoid extra packaging
that you’ll have to pack out.
3. MAP & COMPASS
Your smartphone or GPS can be a powerful
navigation tool, but don’t rely on something that
requires batteries.
4. FIRST AID KIT
Purchase a pre-made first aid kit or make your own
and take a basic first aid class.
5. SUN PROTECTION
Use sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses, and a hat to
shield yourself from the harsh sun.
6. COMB
Also handy for combing hair, you can use a small
plastic comb to remove cactus spines and thorny
stems.
7. FLASHLIGHT
Smartphone flashlight apps will work for a few
minutes, but a flashlight or headlamp are necessary
for longer hikes. Don’t forget extra batteries.
8. MIRROR
Redirected sunlight is visible from many miles away
and can signal for help when your phone fails.
9. INSULATION
Even on a hot day, the temperature can drop quickly
once the sun sets. A light jacket or emergency
blanket can keep you warm if you must spend the
night outdoors.
10. WHISTLE
A whistle will travel longer distances and be more
noticeable than a shout. If you hear a whistle on the
trail, whistle back and head towards the sound.
