Mrs. Kelly has spent decades volunteering with a variety of charitable organizations including the Lutheran women’s Missionary League, trinity Lutheran church, campfire girls, and rotary as well as with the chamber of commerce and the east Valley republican women federated. in 2016, she was recognized for her impressive record of service as palm Desert’s honoree at the riverside county senior inspiration awards. today, at age 93, she continues to volunteer at her church while serving as a member of the city of palm Desert’s parks and recreation commission. proceeds from the luncheon will support the palm Desert sister cities foundation and its work on behalf of citizen diplomacy. individual tickets to the luncheon are $50. for more information and to purchase tickets, please call 760-333-4629. mccallum Theatre’s OpEn call cElEbraTEs 20 YEars OF TalEnT Dates to Remember Daylight Saving Time Begins March 11 First Day of Spring March 20 Annual Clean Up Day april 21 Earth Day april 22 benefit luncheon Will honor Mary Helen Kelly come celebrate two decades of great performances by local artists when open call returns to the Mccallum theatre for its 20th anniversary, thursday through saturday, april 19 to 21. presented by Mccallum theatre education, this popular annual favorite helps develop local talent while offering fun, exciting, and affordable performances to the community. the talent competition teams up local artists with staff and crew to present four visually stunning, energetic performances that are fun for the entire family. audience members vote for their favorite acts at the thursday and friday evening (7 p.m.) and saturday matinee (2 p.m.) performances. winners will be announced at saturday evening's final performance at 7 p.m. and receive prizes ranging from $500 for talent achievement to a $2,500 grand prize. tickets are only $12 and performances sell out each year. to get your tickets, visit the Mccallum theatre box office, 73000 fred waring Drive. tickets can also be purchased online at www.mccallumtheatre.com or by calling 760-340-2787. palm Desert residents can safely dispose of their used oil and oil filters in a convenient and environmentally friendly way at the city’s used oil and oil filter recycling event on saturday, March 3, from 8 to 11 a.m. at autoZone, located at 73605 highway 111 (near Jensen’s). used oil must be stored properly in a clean, sealed, uncontaminated container. workers at the event will accept up to five gallons of used oil per vehicle. it is illegal to transport more than five gallons of used oil in a personal vehicle. anyone who is unable to participate in this event can dispose of their used oil and oil filters free of charge at Burrtec’s recycle center and at other certified collection centers in palm Desert. for more information, please call 760-776-6416. Free, safe Disposal of Used Oil and Oil Filters photo credit Jack hartin the 2018 palm Desert public art Documentary film series continues on March 15 with a free screening of Electric Earth: Doug Aitken. this artbound episode explores the life and work of visual artist Doug aitken and the installation of his “underwater pavilions,” interactive sculptures installed underwater in a marine dive park at catalina island. Matthew crotty, Director of production for KcetLink, will lead a discussion of the film following the screening. the popular series of free public art- themed documentary films concludes on april 19 with Brillo Box (3¢ Off). in 1969, Lisanne skyler’s parents bought an andy warhol Brillo Box (3¢ Off) sculpture for $1,000. an exact replica of a shipping carton for Brillo soap pads, warhol’s Brillo Boxes were at first dismissed by the art world. But 40 years later, with warhol’s reputation as a contemporary-art visionary long secured, the same piece sold for more than $3 million at a record-breaking christie’s auction. Blending a humorous family narrative with pop art history, the film explores the ephemeral nature of art and value, and the decisions that shape a family’s history. Mara gladstone, associate curator at the palm springs art Museum, will be the post screening featured speaker. the documentary film series is presented by the city of palm Desert public art Department and the university of california, riverside palm Desert graduate center. films screen the third thursday of the month at 6 p.m. in the auditorium at ucr palm Desert, 75080 frank sinatra Drive. admission is free, but reservations are recommended. for more information, please call the palm Desert public art Department at 760-837-1663 or register online at palmdesert.ucr.edu/programs. Film series concludes with FascinaTing DOcUmEnTariEs in november, the palm Desert city council approved a new ordinance that eventually eliminates short-term rentals in some residential areas (r-1 and r-2 zones) while preserving the opportunity to own and operate vacation rentals in palm Desert’s planned residential zones, which contain many gated communities along with most of the homes in our community. the city’s new short-term rental ordinance is a compromise that attempts to balance the interests of stakeholders on both sides of this important topic and preserve the qualities that make palm Desert desirable to residents and visitors alike. one of the lessons learned during the year-long process of developing and approving the ordinance was that the city’s enforcement of noise, parking, and other vacation rental-related violations has been inadequate. to address this, the city has created a new short-term rental hotline – 760-862-6900. residents, business owners, and visitors are encouraged to call the hotline anytime, day or night, they experience a problem with a vacation rental. to support the new hotline, the city has hired an additional code compliance officer and expanded patrol hours. the city recognizes that despite the new ordinance, short-term rentals will continue to impact our community in ways both good and bad. we are committed to doing what we can to reduce negative impacts while respecting the rights of home and property owners and preserving the neighborhoods that help make up the fabric of our community. for more information about what the city is doing to regulate short-term rentals, please call the community Development Department at 760-346-0611, ext. 483. to report a problem with a short-term rental, please call the new hotline – 760-862-6900. Volunteering for community service can be a rewarding experience, especially if you volunteer with palm Desert citizens on patrol (cops). palm Desert’s cops volunteers receive specialized training including cpr/first aid, traffic control, driver’s safety, and patrolling requirements. they work closely with police and firefighters, monitoring police radio traffic and responding to accident scenes where they assist with traffic control. cops volunteers also operate the city’s Vacation Home Check Program, which provides palm Desert residents with enhanced security and peace of mind during extended vacations. cops volunteers patrol and visit registered single-family homes in non-gated communities while residents are away for two weeks or more. these ongoing visits include checking for broken windows, evidence of intrusion, and other obvious problems, which are reported to the resident and the police. to register for the Vacation home check program, residents can fill out an application at the portola community center, 45480 portola avenue. for more information about the Vacation home check program or becoming a cops volunteer, please call 760-862-9848. save the date on saturday, March 10, when the palm Desert youth sports association and the city of palm Desert team up for a fun-for-all-ages community celebration at civic center park. take the coachella Valley’s biggest baseball opening day party and add live bands (marching and rock), military fly overs, wildlife from the Living Desert, police officers, firefighters, safety and disaster preparedness information, and much more as neighbors come together to celebrate and strengthen our great community. Be sure to come hungry too as the event will feature a variety of food trucks including the always popular in ‘n out Burger truck. for more information, please contact palm Desert Visitor services at 760-568-1441. Held on Saturday, March 3, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the foot of the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument, the Coachella Valley Wildflower Festival celebrates its 11th year of promoting wellness, recreation, and the beautiful outdoors. The popular annual favorite features wildflower hikes, local artists, a kids’ zone, beer and wine garden, and a wide variety of exhibitions and vendor booths. Winter rain has laid the groundwork for a potentially memorable wildflower season and all are encouraged to come out and enjoy nature’s fireworks as part of a fun day. Offsite parking is a must with regular shuttles running throughout the day between the festival and St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 47535 Highway 74, where parking is free. In April, First Weekend celebrates the return of Brew at the Zoo, an annual favorite at The Living Desert Zoo & Botanical Gardens. Join us Saturday, April 7, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. for a selection of tastings from some of the finest specialty brews around. In addition to beer, there will also be plenty of other libations, including premium wines and non-alcoholic beverages. Attendees will enjoy a culinary adventure of tasty dishes and desserts from some of the Coachella Valley’s top restaurants and caterers. The evening also includes entertainment with music stages throughout the grounds. New this year, the African section of the park will be open for guests to explore and see animals such as zebras and cheetahs.
