A major disaster could strike at any time, and experience has shown that the first 24 to 72 hours afterwards can be critical; with emergency responders stretched thin and resources being quickly depleted, it is important for individuals and neighborhoods to be self-reliant until assistance is available. To help residents and visitors be prepared for a major event, the City of Palm Desert has developed the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program. This 20-hour course educates people about disaster preparedness, and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking an active role in emergency preparedness projects within their community. The Palm Desert CERT Program is certified by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and free to Palm Desert Residents. The next three-day CERT course starts Friday, October 4, from 5 – 9 p.m., and then continues Saturday and Sunday, October 5 and 6, from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Participants must complete all 20 hours to become certified. Classes will be held at Palm Desert City Hall, 73510 Fred Waring Drive. Space is limited. Learn more and register for free at palmdesert.gov/CERT.
